Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team has made a habit out of taking one-goal wins over Haverford in the past few years, and that streak continued this evening as the Owls went across Lancaster Ave and posted a 1-0 shutout to claim their fourth straight victory over the Fords. Hazel Miller got the lone goal of the game for the Owls in the first quarter, and the Bryn Mawr defense and goalkeeping stood strong to pitch the shutout, the team's fifth of the season.
The Owls got the offense going early in the contest, as Miller ripped a shot just wide of the Haverford cage less than two minutes into the game. Though that attempt went begging, it did not take long before Bryn Mawr battled back into the circle and found the back of the cage. Intense pressure from the Owls forwards and midfielders forced a Haverford turnover in their own end of the field. Novy Goetgeluk did a fantastic job of dribbling around several Fords players and crossing into the top of the circle from left to right. The Owls sophomore found some space and ripped a hard shot-pass towards the front of the cage. The ball traveled past several sticks and feet before making it to Miller at the far post, who slammed the ball home to give Bryn Mawr the 1-0 advantage.
That proved to be the only offense the Owls would need, as Bryn Mawr would suffocate the life out of the rest of the game. The Owls kept the ball in the offensive end nearly the whole contest, registering eleven shots and 15 penalty corners in the game. Haverford goaltender Mary Smith and the rest of the Fords defense stood on their heads just to keep Bryn Mawr from scoring any further, as the Owls had almost all the chances. Even on the rare occasion that Haverford could make a foray into the offensive end, the Bryn Mawr pressure forced numerous turnovers and giveaways. Haverford registered just one shot in the contest, a chance coming on a penalty corner early in the second quarter, but Titus made a fantastic diving effort to stick check the ball away from danger. In the end, that would prove to be the most dangerous opportunity for the Fords, and the game would ultimately close out as a 1-0 win for the Owls.
With the win, the Owls move to 8-1 on the season and remain undefeated in Centennial Conference play. Bryn Mawr will get their next action this Saturday on the road, as the Owls will travel to Carlisle to take on Dickinson College in a 1:00 PM Centennial Conference matchup.
