Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – After picking up an historic win over Christopher Newport just 24 hours prior, the Bryn Mawr field hockey team was back in action on Sunday with another big non-conference test at Mary Washington. The Owls battled through some tired legs and a strong start from their opponent, putting in a strong 60-minute performance that saw them take a 3-1 win on the day.
It was an understandably slow start for the Owls, as Mary Washington outshot Bryn Mawr in the first half and took a lead to halftime thanks to a second quarter goal by Ellie Helbling. However, the Owls came out of the halftime break ready to do some damage of their own, and they were able to tie the game up just a couple minutes into the third quarter. An initial penalty corner attempt resulted in another Eagles infraction and a second crack at a set play from a corner. On that ensuing attempt, Annick van Blerkom sent the ball to the top of the near wing, where an Owl had a shot attempt blocked. However, the ball bounded just to the right where Eva Yacura collected. The sophomore ripped a hard shot toward the cage that took a deflection in front and sailed into the back of the goal to tie the contest at 1-1. The Owls would have a couple more chances from there in the third quarter, but Mary Washington was able to fight off those opportunities and send the game into the fourth quarter still deadlocked.
The hosts had the first good opportunities at a go-ahead goal in the final frame, earning two penalty corners and taking three shots in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. However, Maggie Titus did an excellent job stopping each of those shots, giving her defense a chance to clear the danger and set up a counterattack by the Owls offense. That attack came just a minute later, and it proved to be the decisive opportunity for the Owls. After working the ball back down the field, Izzy Robinson-Cloete had a hard shot from the left wing saved by the Mary Washington goaltender. The rebound came straight back to the Owls forward though, and she then sent a centering pass to the middle of the circle where Hazel Miller was waiting. The sophomore knew exactly what to do with the ball, whirling and firing a shot into the back of the cage before the Eagles defense could get in place to put Bryn Mawr up 2-1.
Now with a one-goal lead, Bryn Mawr did all they could to massage the rest of the game away. Bryn Mawr's defense did a great job limiting their opponent's chances, and the Owls were finally able to grab an insurance goal with just a few minutes to go in the contest. Bryn Mawr worked the ball into the attacking third, where the ball ended up on the stick of Novy Goetgeluk. From well outside the circle on the left wing, the sophomore sent a hard ball directly towards the center of the cage. The Mary Washington goaltender was forced to redirect the ball off of her pads, as it may have taken a slight deflection right in front of her. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the ball bounded just to the right of their goalkeeper where Bryn Mawr's Jasmine Peterson was all alone. The Owls first-year quickly corralled the rebound and fired home, finalizing the Bryn Mawr victory at 3-1.
Maggie Titus made nine strong saves on the day for the Owls in her sixth win of the season, while Bryn Mawr had at least three different players score in the contest for the fourth time this season.
With the win, the Owls move to 6-1 on the year. They will kick off Centennial Conference play on Saturday afternoon with their Centennial Conference home opener against Gettysburg. That game will be the final contest of Bryn Mawr's Homecoming day festivities, with gametime set for 3:30 PM on Applebee Field.
