Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls field hockey team was back in action at home earlier Wednesday afternoon as Bryn Mawr looked to get back in the win column against Delaware Valley University. The game proved to be an almost-exclusively one-sided affair, as the Owls outshot the Aggies 24-3 and outcornered them 14-1 on the afternoon. The visitors' defense did well to block nearly a dozen of the Bryn Mawr shots, and Delaware Valley goalkeeper Alyssa Rudd contributed six solid saves as well, but the Owls' pressure was too much for the Aggies to handle. Thekla Jubinville scored late in the first quarter and Lilith Weinlick added an insurance goal early in the fourth to help the Owls claim a 2-0 win on the afternoon.
Bryn Mawr was on the front foot right from the opening whistle, with Hazel Miller forcing Rudd into a save just a minute into the contest. Rudd would have to make two more saves over the next couple of minutes after a flurry of Owls shots, and then Delaware Valley managed to break the other way on the counterattack for one of their lone offensive chances of the contest. The Aggies were able to earn a penalty corner five minutes into the game and they did indeed get a shot off on the opportunity, but it went well wide of the Bryn Mawr cage.
The Owls came right back down into the offensive end of the field and basically camped out there the rest of the quarter. Miller had two more shots saved by Rudd, and then Maggie Barilla and Weinlick had shots of their own blocked. With time winding down in the frame, it seemed as if the Aggies would weather the early storm, but Jubinville and the rest of the Owls put a pin in the visitors' hopes. On Bryn Mawr's seventh penalty corner of the quarter, Annick van Blerkom inserted the ball up to the top of the circle, where Eva Yacura dribbled and fired a hard shot towards the Aggies goal. The visitors' defense once again blocked that effort, but the ball trickled over towards the left wing where van Blerkom had come back into the play. The first-year controlled and then found Jubinville alone even closer to the cage near the left post. Jubinville gathered and spun around, firing a low shot past the Delaware Valley goalkeeper and into the back of the cage to make it a 1-0 Owls lead.
Bryn Mawr would continue to dominate the middle stretches of the game. The Owls earned three penalty corners in the second quarter and took seven more shots, but four of those attempts were blocked, Rudd made another save, and two more went wide. The Aggies got their lone shot-on-goal of the game four minutes out of the halftime break, but Maggie Titus did an excellent job to make a strong save and shut the opportunity down. From there, the Owls went back to peppering the Delaware Valley back line again, taking four more shots in the frame and seeing three of them get blocked.
With the game headed into the fourth quarter and the Owls still holding onto a now frustratingly small 1-0 lead, Bryn Mawr was desperately hunting for an insurance goal, and they found it off the stick of Weinlick. The hosts worked the ball into the offensive end right off the whistle and were able to get the ball onto the stick of Hazel Miller in the circle. The sophomore then made a great pass to find Weinlick in space on the left side of the cage, and Weinlick was able to easily control and blast the ball home from close range to double the Bryn Mawr advantage. The Owls would easily salt away the rest of the contest, taking two more shots and another penalty corner but with no further scoring resulting from those efforts. In the end, Bryn Mawr was able to find a nice rebound win over the Aggies by a 2-0 scoreline.
With the victory, the Owls move to 4-1 on the season. They will now gear up for a big weekend trip to Virginia that will see the squad face off on back-to-back days.
