DeLeuze Excels on Day One of Championships

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Centennial Conference outdoor track & field championships kicked off earlier Friday amidst rainy conditions, but that did not stop Bryn Mawr's Alex deLeuze from putting on an excellent showing. All eyes were on deLeuze as she was the only Owl in action on the opening day of this year's championships, and she certainly did not disappoint.

The Bryn Mawr sophomore is the team's lone entry into the heptathlon at this year's championship, and she opened the day's action with the 100 meter hurdles, an event she picked up specifically so she would have the opportunity to compete in heptathlon. DeLeuze was able to drop over two seconds off of her personal best time, posting a 21.02 in today's action to kick things off and set up an epic run.

Next up was a new event for deLeuze in the high jump. Having never cleared a height in the event, this would be a key moment for the sophomore in her debut heptathlon. DeLeuze opened by clearing a height of 1.10 meters, then proceeded to clear seven more heights! She finished with a new PR of 1.31 meters and collected a whopping 419 points in the event.

It was on to another new event for deLeuze in the shot put, having only thrown once before. The Owls sophomore would end up throwing a long of 6.35 meters for another new PR on the day.

With three events now out of the way, deLeuze finally got to an event where she had some experience in the 200. "Having qualified in the open 200 meter dash, we knew this would be a good event for her," stated Owls head coach Jason Hewitt. "But we didn't realize how good!" DeLeuze would wrap up her first day by running a 28.83 in the 200, good enough to take third place and post her first time under 29 seconds in the event.

DeLeuze finishes day one in sixth place in the heptathlon standings, but still within striking distance of the competition in front of her. She will start things off tomorrow with the long jump before taking a stab at javelin and then wrapping up the competition with the 800 meter run.

There will also be plenty of other Owls in action as day two of championships gets rolling on Saturday. *"We were supported today by members of the team as well as the general Bryn Mawr student body. Many thanks to those who cheered in the rain and the many more who cheered us on from afar." – Coach Hewitt
