Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College Field Hockey Team scored four goals in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock, cruising to a 5-1 victory over visiting McDaniel on Saturday.
The Owls, receiving votes in last week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 20 poll, improve to 5-1 in Centennial Conference play and 11-2 overall, while McDaniel drops to 5-8 overall, 1-6 in Conference.
Bryn Mawr's leading scorer Hazel Miller put the Owls in front just five minutes in, finishing a rebound past McDaniel goalkeeper Mikayla Smith after she stopped the initial shot from Eva Yacura.
That was the only shot the Owls took in the opening period, as the next 20 minutes of play were more midfield stalemate.
Amanda Sponaugle leveled the score with a corner goal of her own at 26:20, blasting a straight strike to the right of Bryn Mawr netminder Maggie Titus.
But the Owls came to life from that point forward, dominating the remaining 34 minutes while outshooting McDaniel 17-2.
Although level 1-1 at the intermission, Bryn Mawr pushed ahead less than two minutes into the third period as Novy Goetgeluk attacked off a penalty corner and finished between the legs of Smith for her second goal of the season.
Six minutes later, Sophie Vagts added an insurance goal in the run of play. Off a McDaniel foul, Thekla Jubinville played a first touch pass into the right corner to Sarah Chapman, who found Miller open in the center of the circle. Facing an on-coming Smith, Miller tucked the ball to her left to Vagts, who finished on her backhand for her second goal in as many games.
In the fourth quarter, penalty corner goals from Jubinville and Miller capped the scoring as the Owls won their third consecutive match against McDaniel.
Bryn Mawr has now scored 16 of their Centennial-leading 25 Conference goals in the second half of their 6 games to date.
With two goals and two assists on Saturday, Miller is now second in the Centennial in goals, assists, and points.
The Owls return to Applebee Field on Wednesday when they host Muhlenberg at 4 PM.
