Owls Topple Unbeaten Haverford in Showdown at Home

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr field hockey squad put together another fantastic performance at home earlier Wednesday afternoon. Facing off against an undefeated Haverford squad, the Owls proved to be the more dangerous team throughout much of Wednesday's tilt, and Bryn Mawr was able to use a second-quarter goal from Hazel Miller to take a 1-0 win. The victory puts a stop to Haverford's eight-game win streak, and more importantly, it gives Bryn Mawr an important Centennial Conference win as well. The goal is Miller's fourth of the season, giving her the team lead in that category. Maggie Titus made several big stops in the contest to help get her team the shutout win, as the senior goalkeeper racked up five saves on the afternoon. Haverford goalkeeper Hannah Roth had an impressive day of her own, as the senior made seven great stops just to keep her team alive in the matchup.

The Owls came out of the gate hot, with the hosts getting two shots within a minute of the contest starting. Roth came up with huge saves on both of those early attempts by Miller and Kate Ervin. A few minutes later, Haverford defender Delaney Snowden came up with a big defensive save on a shot by Thekla Jubinville. On an ensuing corner by the Owls, Haverford saw another defensive save, this time by Caroline Channell. Three minutes after that, Bryn Mawr got another great chance close to the cage, but Roth was there again for the save. Haverford was finally able to break out and maintain some possession of their own later in the quarter, with Amy Kim getting the Fords' first shot on goal of the day. Hpwever, Titus was there to make the stop. The Owls would earn one more penalty corner a few minutes later, but that chance would go uncapitalized upon, and with that the teams headed to the first break still seeking the first goal of the contest.

The second quarter started in a similar fashion to the first, as the Owls were on the front foot from the start. Just a couple minutes into the frame, Bryn Mawr's constant pressure in the offensive third paid off with another penalty corner. The Owls have been one of the top teams in the country in terms of earning corners, but have struggled to take advantage of those opportunities to this point in the year. However, this time Bryn Mawr was able find the conversion. Ryann McManus sent a ball up to the near wing on the insertion, where Eva Yacura deflected a pass across the top of the circle to Courtney Cutone. Cutone moved to her right for a few steps to draw out a pair of defenders, then split those defenders with a perfect pass into the center of the circle. Hazel Miller was waiting there to collect the pass, and the first-year controlled with her back to the cage and then spun and sent a low pass towards the right post. She was likely looking to connect with classmate Kate Ervin, who was waiting at that post to shovel the ball into the cage. However, the ball instead took a deflection off of the body of a Haverford defender and caromed right into the back of the cage, giving Miller the goal and handing the Owls the 1-0 advantage.

Bryn Mawr would continue to keep the pressure up right after that tally, earning two more penalty corners and another shot from Miller. However, Roth made the save on that attempt, and from there, the Fords were finally able to start breaking out of their end and get some chances of their own. Snowden got off a shot on a Fords penalty corner, forcing Titus into a save, and later Snowden would get another shot off that went just wide of the cage. Both sides had a couple more chances in the frame, but Bryn Mawr would take the 1-0 lead into halftime. Out of the break, the third period proved to be a pretty tight affair; the Owls had the only chances, earning two penalty corners and a shot by Ervin, but were unable to increase their lead. Haverford finally bumped up the pressure in the fourth period, as the Fords tallied five shots and three penalty corners in the quarter. Bryn Mawr had done a great job to that point bottling up Ravenel Davis, reigning Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week and the leading scorer in the Centennial Conference by far. However, the senior started to make some noise in the final frame, tallying four shots in the period. However, Titus made saves on three of those chances, with the other going wide. Two of those opportunities came with less than three minutes to go, as Davis got a pair of shots off a minute apart, but Titus saved each of them. The Fords' final chance came with under a minute to go, as they earned one final penalty corner. However, their final shot went wide of the cage, and the horn finally sounded to give the Owls the 1-0 win on the night.

With the victory, Bryn Mawr moves to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play this season. The Owls will be right back in action at home on Saturday as they will welcome Dickinson to campus for another important Centennial Conference showdown. Gametime on Saturday is slated for 12:00 PM.
