Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. - The Owls lacrosse team hit Applebee Field earlier Wednesday afternoon looking for one last non-conference win for the 2015 campaign. However, thanks to a late second-half comeback, the Gators of Notre Dame (Md.) were able to escape with a 10-7 win in the contest. Claire Johnson led the Owls with three goals in the game, including two that gave the team the lead in the second half. Katie Alpert may have been the star of the game, however, as the sophomore goalkeeper made an incredible 22 saves to keep the Owls in the running throughout the game. Notre Dame was led by Kit Talbott and Sawyer Butto, who each scored three goals apiece.
Bryn Mawr (4-12, 0-8 Cent.) got on the board early with the game-opening goal inside the first minute. Johnson won the opening draw of the game, and after a quick foul, Fiona Steele was able to get inside the circle and whip a shot past the Gators' keeper to hand the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
However, Notre Dame (6-7, 4-5 CSAC) struck back quickly to vault themselves into the lead. Brittany Peddicord got the visitors on the board with a game-tying goal just five minutes in. Then, less than a minute later, Talbott tallied her first score of the game to make it 2-1. Bryn Mawr responded thanks to Johnson's first goal of the game, but the Gators would retake the advantage a few minutes later thanks to Butto's first goal.
Bryn Mawr would not be deterred, though. Alison Spain netted a nifty goal of her own to tie things up at 3-3, and then Ashley Arbuckle drew a foul inside the circle with five-and-a-half minutes to go. The senior stepped up for the free position shot, and she would not be denied, firing the ball into the netting to help the Owls leapfrog back in front by a 4-3 score. Once again, however, Notre Dame struck back in lightning fashion, scoring two goals in the last three minutes to take a 5-4 lead into the halftime break.
The Owls came out of the gate for the second half in a very similar manner to the first. After a fiery halftime speech, Elena Broderick tied the game up for Bryn Mawr less than thirty seconds into the half. Steele won the opening draw, and the ball worked its way onto the stick of Diana Kelley. She made a great move to get around her defender, drawing help defense from another Gators defender. That opened the door for Broderick to cut in front of the net, where Kelley found her for a wide open goal, the first of Broderick's young career.
After Bryn Mawr won another draw, Alison Spain lit off a shot that was saved by Notre Dame's De'ja Martin. However, Claire Johnson came up with the rebound, and she was able to put the ball past Martin a few seconds later to put the Owls back in front 6-5. Johnson would then help expand the lead a little over a minute later, as she earned and scored a free position goal to make it a 7-5 game.
Unfortunately, the well would dry up for the Owls from that point on. Notre Dame scored five unanswered goals over the final 25 minutes of play to turn that two-goal deficit into a three goal win.
Alpert made a season-high 22 saves in today's game, frustrating the Gators all afternoon long with her quick hands and sharp angles. The effort gets the sophomore back atop the Centennial Conference in total saves this season, and it is also the second-most saves of Alpert's collegiate career.
Bryn Mawr will now look forward to their final game of the 2015 season this Saturday. The Owls will host Gettysburg and look to play the spoiler on their own Senior Day. The Bullets will come to town on Saturday just a game behind Franklin & Marshall for the top spot in the league, while Bryn Mawr will want to send out their seniors in style in their final game on Applebee Field. Things will all come to a head this weekend, with the game set to kick off at 1:00 PM.
