Box Score Allentown, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr lacrosse team went on the road to Cedar Crest earlier and picked up a huge victory for their efforts. The Owls dominated the first half and were then able to hang on late to preserve an important 14-13 win. Georgina Dominique led the way for the Owls, scoring five goals in the game, including the game-winner with just under ten minutes to play. Freshman goalkeeper Ana Kyrcz picked up her first career win as well, making seven saves in the winning effort. Cedar Crest got a game-high six goals from Vivianna Samite.
The hosts actually jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead eight minutes into today's contest, but Bryn Mawr (4-10, 0-7 Cent.) responded well to get some momentum going their way. Claire Johnson won the ensuing draw after the Falcons' goal, and the Owls got to work peppering the Cedar Crest cage. Diana Kelley put a free position shot just wide, and then Ashley Arbuckle saw her shot saved on a great effort by Falcons keeper Nicole Rivera. However, Johnson collected the rebound and threw it right past Rivera to even the game at 1-1. Then, just over two minutes later, Alison Spain drew a foul and earned a free position shot of her own. She was able to send a great shot into the netting to hand the Owls an early 2-1 lead. Johnson would then double that goal with her second goal of the game to make it 3-1.
Cedar Crest (1-9, 1-6 CSAC) would not go away quietly, however. The Falcons would score two goals of their own to retie the game at 3-all, and then the sides would swap goals to make it a 4-4 game with under ten minutes to go in the half. From there on, though, it was all Owls. Dominique got her first goal of the game to vault Bryn Mawr ahead by a 5-4 margin. Then, Fiona Steele and Spain got in on the action once more, making it a three-goal lead. Cedar Crest managed to get one goal back, but the Owls regained their three-goal lead when Dominique scored one more time with just 39 seconds to go in the half.
The Falcons made it a mission to get back in the game right out of the halftime break, as the hosts scored two quick goals just three minutes into the second frame to cut the Bryn Mawr lead to one. Dominique momentarily staunched the bleeding, netting her third tally of the night on a nice individual run down the the field. However, Cedar Crest continued their march all the way back into the lead, scoring four straight goals in a seven-minute span to turn a 9-7 deficit into an 11-9 lead.
Having seen their big lead diminished in such a short period of time, weaker teams may have folded and given up on the rest of the contest. However, "weakness" is not in the vocabulary of these Owls. Dominique continued her impressive evening by scoring a fourth goal with under fifteen minutes to go in the half. Johnson caused a Falcons turnover as they were pressing for another oal, and she helped lead the charge back down the field. The ball ended up on Dominique's stick, and she knew exactly what to do with it, firing into the cage to make it an 11-10 game.
That goal sparked a flurry of offense for Bryn Mawr, as the Owls would score four more goals over the next five minutes to vault themselves from down one to up three with just under ten minutes to go in the game. Steele scored the game-tying goal for the visitors on a man-advantage, and then Johnson hit back-to-back tallies before Dominique closed out the scoresheet with her fifth score of the game. After all was said and done, Bryn Mawr found themselves headed into crunch time with a nice 14-11 cushion.
The Falcons made one last gasp effort at getting themselves back in the game. The hosts scored back-to-back goals of their own in a 53-second span to get back within one with over five minutes to go. However, a gutty defensive performance by the Owls in those final five minutes helped Bryn Mawr hang on for the huge win. Cedar Crest possessed the ball for almost that entire five-minute stretch, but the Owls defense held firm. Kyrcz made two huge saves to preserve the one goal lead, and the back line blocked another shot and saw three more sail high and wide before the final horn sounded to give the Owls the nice 14-13 win.
The Owls now head into the homestretch of the season, with three more games left on the schedule. All three will come at home on Applebee Field, starting with a Centennial Conference tilt against Muhlenberg this Saturday. Bryn Mawr will play host to the Mules, who currently hold a 6-5 overall record and are in a battle for league playoff position with a 2-3 mark. Saturday's game is slated to start at 1:00 PM on the beautiful Bryn Mawr campus.
