BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr tennis team kept their unblemished record going in 2015 with a big win earlier Tuesday against Alvernia University. In fact, the Owls handed the Crusaders their first loss of the year in a thrilling 5-4 match. Lizzie Siegle and Eram Haider won both matches they played in to help the Owls get the victory on the day.
Alvernia (4-1) actually jumped out in front in the opening part of today's match, taking a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Bryn Mawr (2-0) got their win in second doubles, where Haider and Siegle flummoxed their opponents throughout the match en route to an 8-2 win. However, the Crusaders got a point at first singles, and then managed to beat out Mariam Haider and Molly MacDougall in an 8-6 marathon match to get the one-point advantage in doubles play.
Bryn Mawr answered back in a big way in singles, however. At second singles, Siegle picked up her second win of the day in dominating fashion, earning a point for the Owls with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Lillian Hussar. Freshman Maire Clayton picked up another great point for Bryn Mawr by "bageling" her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 rout. Alvernia did take points in first singles and fourth singles, keeping the match close throughout the day. However, Tirsa Delate tallied a 6-2, 6-1 win at sixth singles, and it was Eram Haider who clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win at fifth singles.
With the win, the Owls open the season 2-0 for the first time since 2010-11. Bryn Mawr may get a chance to pick up their third win in the fall if they can reschedule a match against Immaculata in the next week. If not, the Owls will have to wait until March to keep the momentum rolling in their campaign.
