BRYN MAWR, PA- Bryn Mawr College secured a decisive 17-5 victory over Notre Dame of Maryland University on Wednesday afternoon on Applebee Field. Prior to the first draw, the Owls celebrated their inaugural Apple Day, which was a celebration of Bryn Mawr Athletics' first Director of Athletics and Physical Education, Constance MK Applebee. Festivities included a student-athlete competition at half-time, and all day events across campus!
Bryn Mawr's offensive strength was highlighted by their seven player-up goals, contributing significantly to their commanding win. The Owls out-shot the Gators of Notre Dame, 33-18 and picked up 20 ground balls to Notre Dame of Maryland's 13 to lead them to victory.
How it Happened:
- Bryn Mawr opened the game decisively with a strong offensive showing. Annika Shankar scored the first goal at 13:18 and tallied a career-high total of 4 goals throughout the game. Shannon Gonzalez followed quickly with her first collegiate goal of her career at 13:01, assisted by Elliott Bishop. The Owls' offense continued to dominate with Addy Hansen and Maeve DeLisle each adding to the tally, both capitalizing on player-up opportunities. Bishop and Shankar each netted another goal, bringing Bryn Mawr's total to eight by the end of the quarter. Notre Dame managed to get on the board with a free position goal at 1:10, but Bryn Mawr held a commanding 8-1 lead going into the next quarter.
- The home team extended their lead in the second quarter with a strong offensive showing with two goals by Hansen. She scored her 13th goal of the season at 12:35, followed by another at 7:32, assisted by Bishop during a player-up situation. Notre Dame responded with a goal at 7:05 while playing a player-down, but Bryn Mawr's Brynn Cunningham responded and capped the quarter with her first collegiate goal at 1:01, while also gathering five ground balls. Bryn Mawr maintained control, heading into the half-time break with an 11-2 lead.
- In the third quarter, the Owls extended their lead with decisive scoring plays. Notre Dame scored at 11:33. However, Bryn Mawr responded quickly, with Bishop scoring twice, including a player-up goal from a free position shot at 10:15, securing a career-high of 6 unassisted goals. Maeve Slemko and Nakayla Richardson contributed defensively, Slemko caused two turnovers and Richardson cause two turnovers with two ground balls, which helped maintain Bryn Mawr's momentum and end the quarter ahead, 13-3.
- In the final quarter, Notre Dame made an early push with two back-to-back goals. The Owls fought back as Bishop scored twice, at 10:13 and again at 9:07, which gives the sophomore 18 goals on the season. Hansen contributed a player-up goal at 3:30, while Shankar closed the scoring with a goal at 0:35. Cunningham made crucial saves to maintain Bryn Mawr's lead, and the Owls walked away with a 17-5, victory.
