BRYN MAWR, PA — Bryn Mawr basketball turned the Class of 1958 Gymnasium into a celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday evening, welcoming Ursinus College in a spirited matchup highlighted by a halftime scrimmage from Main Line Girls Basketball. In a hard-fought contest that saw both teams battle to 33 rebounds, the Owls ultimately fell to the Bears, 61-44.
Jenny Briggs scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and collected seven rebounds while also recording two steals.
Michelle Jiang added eight points and contributed significantly on the boards with eight rebounds, alongside two steals.
Hannah Mack posted nine points, made one 3-pointer, and tallied three steals.
Jenna Vollor finished with six points and led the team in rebounding with 11 total boards.
How It Happened:
- Bryn Mawr opened the first quarter with strong defensive rebounding, securing eight boards to limit Ursinus' second-chance opportunities. The team capitalized on fast-break situations, with Mack converting a key layup to push Bryn Mawr ahead 7-4 early in the quarter. Briggs added a crucial 3-pointer to regain the lead at 14-12 with just over three minutes remaining.
- Despite a steady effort, Bryn Mawr faced challenges with turnovers and foul trouble late in the quarter, allowing Ursinus to close on a 7-0 run. The quarter ended with Bryn Mawr trailing 19-14.
- Ursinus gained momentum in the second quarter, capitalizing on turnovers and second-chance points. Despite Bryn Mawr's defensive efforts, including two blocks by Jiang and Hannah Govert, Ursinus outscored them in the paint, contributing to an 11-point swing. Briggs provided a layup and two free throws to keep Bryn Mawr in contention. The quarter concluded with Ursinus leading 33–20.
- The third quarter began with Bryn Mawr striving to close the gap, highlighted by Briggs' three-pointer at 8:52, assisted by Govert. Despite efforts to maintain momentum, numerous turnovers hindered consistent scoring opportunities. Jiang contributed defensively with a steal, but Bryn Mawr struggled to capitalize offensively.
- Ursinus capitalized on turnovers, extending their lead with points off fast breaks and second chances. Colleen Blackman's three-pointer at 3:42 furthered Ursinus' advantage. The quarter concluded with Bryn Mawr trailing, the score standing at 48–30.
- Bryn Mawr opened the fourth quarter with Briggs sinking a three-pointer at 9:19, cutting into Ursinus's lead. The team capitalized on Ursinus turnovers, with Jiang and Mack both contributing key rebounds and points from the paint.
