Bryn Mawr Pushes Swarthmore in Tight Conference Clash

BRYN MAWR, PA — Bryn Mawr College returned home to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium on Wednesday evening to host Swarthmore College in a tightly contested Centennial Conference showdown. The Owls carried a slim 22–20 advantage into halftime, and the second half featured a back-and-forth battle with multiple lead changes. Despite Bryn Mawr's relentless effort down the stretch, the Garnet edged ahead in the closing minutes to secure a narrow 50–45 victory.

Jenna Vollor collected a team-high 13 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive end. Hannah Mack scored 12 points and added five rebounds in the contest. Jenny Briggs contributed 13 points, converting five of six free throw attempts. Hannah Govert recorded six points on 3-for-5 shooting and provided two assists.

How It Happened:
  • Swarthmore set the tone early, jumping out to an 8–0 lead before Briggs put Bryn Mawr on the board with a pair of free throws. The Garnet answered immediately, converting their own trips to the line and knocking down a jumper to stretch the advantage to 12–2.
  • The second quarter saw Bryn Mawr initiate a surge with Govert scoring a jumper in the paint, assisted by Mack, establishing early momentum. The Owls capitalized on Swarthmore's turnovers, converting them into points and tying the game at 20. During this quarter, Bryn Mawr's defense limited Swarthmore to just eight points, while the home team scored 20, turning the momentum in their favor.
  • Key plays included a three-pointer by Mack and a series of defensive rebounds that contributed to Bryn Mawr taking a narrow lead. Briggs made two crucial free throws in the closing seconds to push Bryn Mawr ahead. The quarter ended with the Owls leading 22-20.
  • The third quarter began with Bryn Mawr battling to maintain momentum despite an early exchange of turnovers. Mack quickly responded with a layup to regain a brief lead, but Swarthmore countered with a 3-pointer from Catherine Chadwell, shifting the advantage. Briggs narrowed the gap with a layup and a subsequent 3-pointer, keeping the contest tense.
  • Midway through the quarter, Bryn Mawr's defensive rebounds by Sydney Gelhar and Sena Kaper-Dale helped keep Swarthmore in check, while a layup by Gelhar tied the score at 31. However, Swarthmore capitalized on free throws and a fast-break layup to pull ahead. Despite a late jumper by Gelhar, the quarter concluded with Swarthmore leading 36–33.
  • The final quarter began with Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore exchanging leads, reflecting the tight contest. The Owls' Mack quickly countered Swarthmore's early score with a jumper, maintaining the competitive pace. Vollor's defensive rebound and layup at 6:31 brought Bryn Mawr within two, keeping them well in the race at 40–38.
  • As the quarter progressed, Michelle Jiang tied the game at 40 with a jumper, but Swarthmore regained momentum with a crucial layup at 4:45. Bryn Mawr responded with a jumper from Govert, again leveling the score at 42. The visitors gained the upper hand in the closing moments, scoring a layup and free throws to secure a 50–45 victory.
