Bryn Mawr Narrowly Falls to Swarthmore 62-55

SWARTHMORE, PA — Bryn Mawr basketball traveled to the Tarble Pavilion on Wednesday evening in search of their second conference win of the season against the Swarthmore Garnet. The matchup was a tight one from the start, with the Owls grabbing several brief leads throughout the first half and keeping the score within striking distance late. Bryn Mawr narrowed the deficit to just two points in the final minutes, but Swarthmore held on down the stretch to take the 62–55 victory.

Mack led Bryn Mawr with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and recorded four blocks. Briggs scored 10 points, hitting three shots from beyond the arc, and added six assists. Vollor collected 13 rebounds and contributed 11 points. Jiang added eight points and recorded three steals.

How It Happened:
  • Bryn Mawr began the first quarter with a strong offensive play, highlighted by Hannah Mack's contributions, including a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup. The team capitalized on Swarthmore's turnovers, scoring nine points off turnovers and matching Swarthmore's points in the paint with 12. Jenny Briggs facilitated the offense with multiple assists, helping Bryn Mawr maintain a narrow edge.
  • Michelle Jiang was effective under the basket, securing offensive rebounds and converting them to points, which sustained the team's momentum. As the quarter closed, Jenna Vollor scored a pivotal layup with 17 seconds left, allowing Bryn Mawr to edge ahead. Bryn Mawr led 16-15 after the first quarter.
  • Bryn Mawr began the second quarter with strong defensive efforts, including three blocks, notably by Mack, who contributed significantly in the paint. Briggs helped maintain offensive momentum with a key 3-pointer early in the period, assisted by Jiang, as Bryn Mawr briefly retook the lead at 19–18.
  • Maddy Patel's jump shot extended the lead to 21–18, but Swarthmore responded with a scoring run to regain control. Despite a late 3-pointer from Mack, Bryn Mawr closed the quarter trailing 31–29.
  • Swarthmore began the third quarter by extending their lead with efficient free-throw shooting and strong rebounding. The Owls struggled to find their rhythm early, missing several shots in the paint, but they managed to create turnovers to limit Swarthmore's scoring opportunities. Midway through the quarter, Swarthmore capitalized on Bryn Mawr's fouls, converting multiple free throws to increase their advantage.
  • Bryn Mawr mounted a late rally, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Briggs and Mack, cutting into Swarthmore's lead. Despite their efforts, Swarthmore's consistent scoring allowed them to maintain control. The quarter closed with Swarthmore leading 44–38.
  • Bryn Mawr initiated the fourth quarter with a layup by Mack, narrowing the deficit to four points. Despite a strong defensive effort, including a block by Mack, Swarthmore maintained their lead with consistent free-throw shooting throughout the period. Bryn Mawr kept the contest within reach with key offensive plays, including a three-pointer by Briggs at the 1:07 mark.
  • The quarter remained competitive, marked by strategic free throws from both teams. The Owls capitalized on Swarthmore's turnovers to stay close, as Vollor's free throws reduced the gap to four points near the end. However, Swarthmore's late-game free throws extended their lead, and Bryn Mawr concluded the quarter trailing 62-55.
