Owls Fall to Haverford in Hard-Fought Centennial Clash

BRYN MAWR, PA- Bryn Mawr College fell to Haverford College, 57-47, at Class of 1958 Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, despite forcing 23 turnovers with eight steals in a closely contested matchup.

Jenna Vollor shined with a career-high 16 points, converting six of seven free throws and grabbing eight rebounds against the Fords. Jenny Briggs contributed significantly with 10 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, and chipping in six assists and three steals. Michelle Jiang nearly posted a double-double, collecting 12 rebounds and scoring seven points, while also recording four steals. Hannah Mack added 10 points and blocked one shot, contributing to the Owls' defensive efforts.

How It Happened:
  • Bryn Mawr began the game with early momentum as Vollor converted a layup and free throw to open scoring. The Owls maintained pressure with efficient ball movement, assisting on five of their six field goals. Midway through the quarter, Briggs drained a 3-pointer, expanding the lead to 10-7. On defense, Mack registered a block, limiting the Fords' scoring opportunities. As the quarter progressed, the Owls capitalized on turnovers and second-chance points, with Sydney Gelhar's layup extending the lead. The quarter concluded with the Owls ahead 19-15, following a late 3-pointer by Mack.
  • Haverford opened the second quarter with a layup, quickly equalizing the score and setting the tone for a competitive quarter. Bryn Mawr's defense responded with steals by Briggs and Jiang, creating opportunities to keep pace, though the team struggled to capitalize on shot attempts. Halfway through the quarter, Mack finished a fast-break layup assisted by Briggs to narrow the gap, but the Fords maintained pressure, scoring points in the paint. Despite a late layup by Bridget Barron, the Owls entered the half-time break trailing 30-27.
  • Bryn Mawr opened the third quarter with a layup by Jiang, assisted by Mack, to close the gap momentarily. Despite multiple defensive rebounds and a fast-break layup by Mack, turnovers stalled Bryn Mawr's offensive rhythm. The Fords capitalized on these turnovers, extending their lead with a 3-pointer later in the frame. The quarter saw the Owls facing tight defense, which led to several missed opportunities and turnovers. Jiang's late free throws helped narrow the deficit slightly. However, Haverford closed the quarter with a layup and free throw, ending the quarter with a 44-36 lead over Bryn Mawr.
  • In the final frame, Bryn Mawr began with renewed defensive effort as Briggs blocked a layup attempt early on. Despite this, the Fords maintained their scoring pace with effective free-throw shooting, allowing them to extend their lead. A key moment for the Owls came when Jiang assisted Briggs on a crucial 3-pointer at 6:09, cutting into the deficit. The Owls maintained resilience with defensive stops and steals, including a swipe by Briggs at 3:05 that resulted in a fast-break opportunity. However, Haverford capitalized on turnovers and maintained their lead with a timely 3-pointer and effective free-throw shooting down the stretch. The quarter concluded with Briggs hitting another 3-pointer in the final seconds, but the Fords' lead held firm, ending the game, 57-47.
