BALTIMORE, MD. – Bryn Mawr field hockey faced a tough test in its Centennial Conference opener on Saturday afternoon, taking on nationally ranked No. 3 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field. The Owls showed plenty of fight across four quarters, but the Blue Jays' offensive firepower proved too much in a 7-1 final.
Highlights:
- Hopkins wasted little time getting on the board, converting in the seventh minute on a cross into the circle. The Blue Jays controlled much of the first half, using a stretch of seven penalty corners in the second quarter to generate sustained pressure.
- Bryn Mawr's defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper Charlene Basque, held strong for long stretches, with Basque making seven saves in the opening period, including a stop on a penalty stroke at the 18:39 mark.
- The hosts added three more goals in the third quarter to extend their lead. Bryn Mawr's backline continued to work hard, with Zoe Woon tallying a defensive save to deny a Hopkins chance.
- The Owls found their breakthrough in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Rachel Ofner fired an early shot on target, and minutes later created the team's highlight of the day when she set up Lucie Burgess in front of goal. Burgess capitalized, burying her sixth goal of the season to put Bryn Mawr on the board at the 46:43 mark. The forward finished with a team-high seven shots, six of those on goal.
- In total, Bryn Mawr tallied 13 shots, including 10 on goal, and earned six penalty corners. Basque finished with a season high 12 saves in the cage, and the Owls' defense combined for multiple blocks and clearances to limit further damage late.
