WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Bryn Mawr tennis team opened their season in commanding fashion on Friday, earning a 6-1 win over Wilkes University at the Ralston Athletic Complex. The victory was highlighted by strong debuts from the Owls' first-years, with every newcomer earning at least one win in their first collegiate match.
Highlights:
- Bryn Mawr secured the doubles point with convincing wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Sophie Fenster and first-year Giselle Gandakusuma earned a 6-0 win at No. 2, while first-years Bianca Vesuna and Shay Villegas swept their No. 3 match by the same score.
- In singles play, senior Kelli Eng earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2, while sophomore Claire Emanuel followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3.
- The first-years shined in singles, with Gandakusuma cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 and Vesuna taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 5.
- Senior Gioanna Zhao closed out the lineup with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
- In exhibition play, first-years Villegas (8-2) and Lily Braswell (8-0) added impressive wins to cap the day.
