BRYN MAWR, PA. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team struck first on Saturday afternoon, but visiting York (Pa.) responded with two quick goals in the third quarter to edge the Owls, 2-1, at Shillingford Field.
Highlights:
- Bryn Mawr wasted no time finding the back of the cage, breaking through less than four minutes into the contest. Off a penalty corner, first-year forward Leya Patel slotted home her third goal of the season to give the Owls an early 1-0 advantage. The Bryn Mawr defense then held strong through the rest of the first half, with goalkeeper Charlene Basque making four key saves to preserve the lead heading into the break. Sophie Chung battled for the Owls on defense, anchoring the backline for the home team.
- York regrouped after halftime and found momentum in the third quarter, scoring their first goal two minutes into the frame. Bryn Mawr pushed for an equalizer in the final frame, recording four shots, two penalty corners and subbed on an extra field player for Basque, but York's defense held firm to secure the result.
- The Owls finished with eight shots, six of them on target, while Basque registered four saves across nearly 57 minutes of action. Senior defender Maggie Barilla tallied three shots to help fuel the attack, while Patel and sophomore forward Lucie Burgess also chipped in shots on goal.
