READING, PA- Bryn Mawr defeated Penn St. Berks, 60-40, at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center on Tuesday night. The Owls overwhelmed the Nittany Lions defensively, capitalizing on 19 points off 24 turnovers to ensure the win.
How it Happened:
- Bryn Mawr opened up the game by establishing an early lead on the defensive end, forcing seven turnovers that resulted in nine points. Significant contributions came off turnovers and from Owls in the paint, as Michelle Jiang, who scored a season-high of 11 points, capitalized on fast breaks. Hannah Govert capitalized on fast break points as well and matched Jiang's 11 points on the night. Towards the end of the quarter, Bryn Mawr intensified their offensive pace with a 3-pointer from Maddy Patel that extended the lead. The Owls finished the period ahead 15-7.
- At the start of the second quarter, Bryn Mawr maintained control with a quick transition layup from Patel, assisted by Jenny Briggs, who registered a career-high nine assists, setting the tone for an effective offensive display. The Owls capitalized on turnovers and strong defensive pressure, with Briggs securing two steals and five assists throughout the quarter. Jiang's consistent scoring, including a jumper assisted by Jenna Vollor, helped maintain momentum. Bryn Mawr's defense limited Penn St. Berks to just four baskets and forced five turnovers, closing the quarter with a 33-18 lead.
- Out of the halftime break, Bryn Mawr relied on their defense converting to offense with key steals by Jiang and Cameron Richter. Despite several turnovers, Briggs found offensive rhythm with a jumper and a layup. Bridget Barron added a free throw to further extend the lead, while a Vollor layup at 3:32, assisted by Briggs, added to Bryn Mawr's quick scoring pace. Despite the Nittany Lions' effort to close the gap, the Owls' defense held firm, allowing only 12 points in the quarter. The final minute saw Bryn Mawr maintaining their lead, concluded by a jumper from Richter, with the Owls leading 42-30.
- Bryn Mawr battled in the paint during the final frame, scoring 14 points in the lane. Vollor contributed significantly with several layups, dished out from Briggs. Jiang added to the momentum with a fast-break layup and converted an and-one opportunity that stretched the scoring gap. Defensively, Bryn Mawr was effective, forcing five turnovers and picking up three steals, which limited Penn St. Berks' opportunities. The team capitalized on these defensive stops to extend their lead, finishing the game 60-40 in favor of the Owls.
