Owls Celebrate Seniors in Hard-Fought Battle with #14 Dickinson

BRYN MAWR, PA- Bryn Mawr field hockey honored its seniors in style on Saturday afternoon at Shillingford Field, as the Owls celebrated Annick van Blerkom, Maggie Barilla, Lauren Barlow, Jasmine Peterson, Noor Werndlij, Natasha Ring, and Charlene Basque for their incredible contributions to the program. The 2026 class contributed to all 10 nationally ranked wins in the program's history. Despite a strong defensive effort and plenty of chances in the circle, the Owls came up just short in a 1–0 setback against #14 Dickinson.

Highlights:
  • The Owls came out strong in the first quarter, earning four penalty corners in the opening minutes. Senior van Blerkom fired the first shot on goal, followed quickly by an attempt from sophomore Leya Patel, but Dickinson's keeper was there to make the saves. Later in the quarter, Barilla nearly broke through on a penalty corner, ripping a shot on cage that forced another defensive stop.
  • In the second quarter, the game tightened as both teams traded possessions. First-year Carrie Povich continued to create opportunities from the midfield, inserting on multiple corners. Bryn Mawr's defense, led by seniors Barilla and Ring, and Juniors Sophie Chung and Zoe Woon, held strong to keep the contest scoreless going into halftime.
  • The decisive moment came midway through the third quarter, when Dickinson capitalized on a penalty corner to notch the game's only goal. Still, the Owls fought back hard. Senior goalkeeper Basque was outstanding in the cage, piling up six saves, including four in the third period alone to keep Bryn Mawr within striking distance.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Owls pressed for the equalizer. Barilla and Addison Graupensperger both put shots on goal, while van Blerkom and Povich set up corners that nearly broke through. Despite sustained pressure and a final flurry in the circle, the Owls couldn't find the back of the cage.
While the result didn't go their way, the afternoon was all about celebrating a remarkable senior class whose impact on Bryn Mawr field hockey will be felt for years to come. Adding to the festivities, Bryn Mawr's brand-new mascot, Olympia—"Olly" for short—made her debut at halftime, thrilling the crowd and bringing an extra spark to Senior Day.

The Owls will return to Shillingford field on Wednesday, October 8th at 4:00 PM EST as they host the Mules of Muhlenberg College in their fifth Centennial Conference match-up of the season.
