BRYN MAWR, PA- The Bryn Mawr field hockey team delivered a thrilling performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating nationally ranked #16 Haverford 2-1 on Applebee Field. The victory marks one of the program's first win against a nationally ranked opponent this season and a major highlight of the Owls' 2025 campaign.
Highlights:
- Senior Maggie Barilla led the charge for Bryn Mawr, scoring both of the team's goals — including the program's first converted penalty stroke of the season. Barilla's goals are her first since the Owls' second game of the season.
- Bryn Mawr and Haverford battled through a tense, scoreless first half with neither defense giving way, as goalkeeper Charlene Basque stood tall in the cage and turned away multiple first-quarter opportunities.
- The Owls broke through in the third quarter after Leya Patel led a fast break into the circle drawing a penalty stroke. Barilla stepped to the spot and buried her shot to the lower corner at the 38-minute mark, putting the Owls ahead 1–0.
- Haverford, ranked 16th nationally in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, leveled the game early in the fourth quarter, but the Owls remained composed. With the score tied and time winding down, Bryn Mawr pushed forward once more. In the 59th minute, Bryn Mawr forced a Haverford error and earned a penalty corner. Carrie Povich threaded a pass to Noor Werndlij who chipped the ball to Barilla inside the circle, and the senior captain slotted home the game-winner for her fourth goal of the season and second of the afternoon.
- Basque held down the defense with five saves, including two key stops in the final minutes as Haverford pressed for an equalizer. The backline of Zoe Woon, Barilla, Sophie Chung, and defensive midfielder Delia Angulo Chen, limited the Fords' shot opportunities and helped the Owls fend off a series of late penalty corners.
