BRYN MAWR, PA - The Bryn Mawr field hockey team showcased its defensive discipline and determination on Saturday afternoon, but a single second-quarter goal stood as the difference as the Owls fell 1-0 to Ursinus in Centennial Conference play at Shillingford Field.
Highlights:
- Senior goalkeeper Charlene Basque anchored the back line with a standout performance, tallying 11 saves, including several in quick succession to keep the Bears off the board for much of the contest. The senior's composure helped the Owls withstand a relentless Ursinus offense that produced 15 total shots and 12 on target.
- After a scoreless first quarter that saw both sides exchange early penalty corners, Ursinus capitalized midway through the second frame. Remi Lloyd redirected a ball from Kirsten Johnson off a corner play to put the visitors ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute. Despite the breakthrough, the Owls held firm for the remainder of the game, continuing to disrupt passing lanes and deny second-chance opportunities inside the circle.
- Bryn Mawr found their attacking rhythm in the second half, pushing forward through the midfield led by Noor Werndlij and Leya Patel, who each recorded shots on goal. Annick van Blerkom also fired a clean look on frame in the closing minutes as the Owls earned a pair of late penalty corners, but Ursinus goalkeeper turned away all three Bryn Mawr attempts.
- Defensively, the Owls' backfield unit of Sophie Chung, Zoe Woon, Maggie Barilla, and Natasha Ring played with consistency and poise under pressure, cutting off numerous entry passes and clearing danger from the circle. Bryn Mawr's effort was highlighted by a spirited fourth quarter in which Basque made seven saves to keep the Owls within striking distance until the final horn.
