BRYN MAWR, PA — The Bryn Mawr field hockey traveled to Swarthmore Wednesday night for a Centennial Conference. Despite controlling long stretches of possession and outshooting Swarthmore in the second half, a first quarter Swarthmore goal proved to be the difference as the Owls fell, 1-0.
Highlights:
- Swarthmore opened scoring less than two minutes in on a rebound finish by Amelia Landry, capitalizing on an early penalty corner opportunity. Carrie Povich and Annick van Blerkom each registered first-quarter shots for the Owls, but neither found the back of the cage as Swarthmore held the early edge.
- The Garnet controlled much of the second frame with three shots on goal, but goalkeeper Charlene Basque stood tall in the cage, turning away every attempt to keep Bryn Mawr within striking distance. Swarthmore carried a narrow 1–0 advantage into halftime.
- Returning for the third period, Bryn Mawr flipped the momentum, earning back-to-back corners taken by Povich midway through the frame. Addison Graupensperger, Maggie Barilla, and Delia Angulo Chen each fired shots on target, but the Garnet goalkeeper came up with critical saves to preserve the one-goal lead.
- The Owls maintained offensive pressure in the final 15 minutes, with quality attempts from Rachel Ofner and Barilla, yet the Swarthmore defense continued to hold firm. In a final push, head coach Victor Brady pulled goalkeeper Basque with 3:13 remaining and inserted Graupensperger as an extra field player in a last-ditch effort to equalize. Despite the bold move and sustained pressure, the Owls didn't convert, falling narrowly 1–0 in a hard-fought conference battle.
The Owls will return to Shillingford Field on Saturday at 1:00 PM EST for another conference game against Ursinus College. Tune into the game live on gobrynmawr.com and follow @bmcathletics on social media to stay up to date with your favorite Bryn Mawr teams!
