JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball team played their second tri-match of the 2024 season earlier Saturday against Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham and New Jersey City University. The Owls took a set off the Devils in their first match, but went 0-2 on the day.
In the first match against FDU-Florham, junior
Elise Perry led the Owls with 19 points followed by first-year
Zara Kepler with 16 points. First-year
Emily Brennan and junior
Anna Dravk led Bryn Mawr's defense with 23 and 16 assists respectively.
In the Owls' second match of the day, NJCU was led by Brenda Gonzalez with 19.5 points while Bryn Mawr was led by
Adelaide Grace and
Zara Kepler with 11.5 and 10 points respectively. First-year
Tula Reihman recorded two solo blocks.
Highlights against FDU-Florham:
- Kepler and Perry tag teamed with kills in the opening minutes of the game to give the Owls a 3-0 lead over the Devils. Bryn Mawr held the lead most of the set, but FDU was always on their heels. The Owls earned themselves set point at 24-22, but did not close the set and the Devils broke away to win the first set, 27-25.
- Bryn Mawr managed five point runs twice in the second set. Tied at 7-7, the Owls won three straight points off a kill followed by a service ace from Kepler. Running ahead to 20-12, Bryn Mawr recorded three more kills followed by a service ace from Brennan to close the set, 25-12.
- Perry and Kepler each recorded two service aces in the third set, but at 18-18, the Devils paced a six-point lead to eventually win the set, 25-19.
- Bryn Mawr had a strong service game in the final stanza with five aces by Perry (2), Kepler (2), and Dravk (1). The Devils had their strongest hitting percentage of the match at .393. A few Bryn Mawr errors by the Owls proved to be the difference in a close final set as the Devils finished out the set 25-22 to win the match, 3-1.
Highlights against NJCU:
- NJCU took an early lead in the opening points of the match, which continued until the Owls went on a four-point rally to bring the Knights' lead down to 20-17. At set point for the Knights, three different Owls recorded kills to give the Owls their first lead of the set at 25-24. The Knights won the next three points to take the set, 27-25.
- The second set was off to a quick start as the score tied five times by 7-7. Taking advantage of kills by Kepler and fellow first-year Tula Reihman and two errors by the Knights, the Owls took a four-point lead at 11-7. The Owls extended their lead to 16-10, but NJCU found a way to tie the game at 16-16. From there, the Knights held onto the lead to win the set, 25-21.
- The Owls had a strong start to the final stanza with a lead at 5-2 off a service ace by Perry. Yet, a five-point run by the Knights gave them the momentum they needed to hold onto the lead and close the set, 25-15.
