Owls Upset #14 in Overtime Thriller

EWING, N.J.- Bryn Mawr field hockey traveled across the bridge Wednesday afternoon to Ewing N.J. where they faced #14 TCNJ. In this first-time match-up between the visiting Owls and the host team Lions, Bryn Mawr field hockey left victorious. After a TCNJ goal in the first 17 minutes of game play, the Owls battled back in the second half tying it up at minute 47. Through seven and a half minutes of overtime Bryn Mawr field hockey secured the win with a fast-break goal. This win marks win number two against nationally ranked opponents for the Owls, and their highest ranked win on the road in program history.

Highlights:

  • As a team, Bryn Mawr outshot TCNJ 22-10 and earned 12 penalty corners to the Lions' five.

  • Throughout the first 30 minutes of gameplay, the Owls earned four penalty corners but did not find the back of the net. The second half marked a fiery start for Bryn Mawr as they earned three corners within the first 10 minutes and took seven shots on goal. Five different Owls got in on the action during the third period including first-year Leya Patel, and junior Jasmine Peterson.

  • Entering the fourth quarter scoreless, Bryn Mawr flew into action tying up the game two minutes in. The senior-senior connection of Novy Goetgeluk to Eva Yacura ensured an Owls goal at minute 47. Yacura would go on to record seven shots on the day.

  • After allowing one goal in the first half, goalkeeper Charlene Basque would go on to record four saves on the day and prevent the Lions from scoring again.

  • Within the seven minutes of overtime play, Bryn Mawr field hockey would cause five penalty corners against the Lions within less than a minute off the game clock. It would not be until minute 67 of the match that Bryn Mawr would seal the deal. Goetgeluk attacked down field to lead an Owls charge towards the goal. Running with her was junior midfielder Noor Werndlij. A cross from Goetgeluk to Werndlij produced an Owls goal. This goal marked Werndlij's first career goal and Goetgeluk's second assist on the day.

Bryn Mawr field hockey turns its attention to Sunday September 15th at 1:00 PM as they take on their third ranked opponent on the season, #10 Lynchburg University.
