CHESTER, PA – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team began the 2024 season on a high note with a 2-1 victory in overtime earlier Friday evening at Widener. Play remained in the Owls' favor throughout most of the game with Bryn Mawr taking 14 penalty corners and 10 shots on goal against the Lions. The Owls' efforts came into fruition 39 seconds into overtime as sophomore
Sophie Chung scored the winning goal.
Highlights:
- The Owls were off to a quick offensive start to keep Widener's defense busy in the opening period, but after two blocked shots and a save, the game remained scoreless.
- The Lions scored the first goal of the game in the opening minutes of the second period, but the Owls fought back with five shots in the remaining half, three of which were taken by 2024 NFHCA DIII Watchlist member Novy Goetgeluk.
- Trailing 0-1 at halftime, the Owls returned to the field on the offense with junior Sophie Vagts scoring her first goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1. She was assisted by senior captain Reba Ervin.
- Chung scored her first collegiate goal less than a minute into overtime to give the Owls their first win of the 2024 season.
