Owls Earn Road Win Behind Stellar Defensive Showing

CARLISLE, PA- Bryn Mawr field hockey traveled to Dickinson College on Friday afternoon for a Centennial Conference game against the Red Devils. In a game that saw 24 shots, 16 of them from Dickinson, the Owls walked away with a 2-0 win on the road.

Highlights:

  • Dickinson opened the game on the offensive attack and caught the Owls flat-footed. The Red Devils pressured Bryn Mawr's defense taking four shots throughout the first quarter. At 2:18, defender Maggie Barilla earned a defensive save for the Owls after Dickinson made a fast break push towards the goal.

  • Still on the attack, Dickinson maintained their pressure on Bryn Mawr's defensive backline throughout quarter two. At 17:16, goalie Charlene Basque saved a Red Devil's shot to keep the game scoreless. The Owls' corner defense of Eva Yacura, Sophie Chung, Reba Ervin, Barilla, and Basque saw a total of 12 Dickinson corners, six of those during quarter two alone, and were able to keep the Red Devils off the board.

  • After a scoreless first half, both teams tried to put points on the board. The Owls came out and looked to pressure Dickinson. Basque recorded four saves in the third quarter alone to protect the cage for Bryn Mawr. She earned seven saves on the day.

  • At 31:52, the Owls drew a penalty corner against the Red Devils' defense. Zoe Woon sent the ball to the top of the circle to a ready Yacura, who found the back of the cage to set Bryn Mawr ahead, 1-0.

  • Quarter four started off as a back-and-forth battle between the Owls and the Red Devils. Although ahead, Bryn Mawr maintained their offensive attack on the Dickinson defenders throughout the final 15 minutes of play. At 49:14, senior forward Sophie Vagts received a through ball at midfield. She outran the Red Devils' defense and took the ball into Dickinson territory for a solo shot and goal. Vagts's goal put Bryn Mawr ahead, 2-0 to secure the win.
