CARLISLE, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr basketball team traveled to Dickinson earlier Tuesday afternoon for a 6pm game in the Kline Center. The Owls outscored the Red Devils 16-12 in the final quarter with a flawless performance at the line, but it was not enough to overcome the home team's lead gained in the first quarter, and Dickinson took the win 63-44.
The Owls were led by
Michelle Jiang who scored 13 points. First-year
Daphne Bracker-Sturm also made a splash to record nine points and two blocks in their second game back from an injury.
Highlights:
- The Red Devils took an early lead with a layup 13 seconds into the opening whistle. Jiang scored the Owls first two baskets on jumpers, but Bryn Mawr was unable to quell Dickinson's strong first quarter showing and the Red Devils strengthened their lead to 21-6.
- Jiang opened the second quarter for the Owls with a three-pointer followed by three baskets in a row by Bracker-Sturm in under a minute. At 5:24 on the clock Bracker-Sturm made a layup followed by a free throw and a jumper. Both teams continued to trade points, but the Red Devils maintained the lead 36-18 to enter halftime.
- Bryn Mawr's scoreboard remained stunted for the opening six minutes of the second half. Captain Jessica Smith ended the Owls' dry spell at 4:01 left in the third quarter with a jumper off a fastbreak thanks to a Bracker-Sturm defensive rebound. Sophomore Hannah Govert added her first points of the day less than a minute later off her own jumper followed by two jumpers by Jiang in the final seconds of the quarter.
- The Owls were flawless at the line in the final stanza as Bryn Mawr went eight for eight on free throws to outscore Dickinson 16-12. Despite their lead, the Red Devils became more aggressive in the fourth quarter, which resulted in five fouls, four of which awarded Bryn Mawr two free throw opportunities apiece. The Owls took advantage of their chance as junior Kris Pasia, Bracker-Sturm, Smith, and Govert all saw clean baskets.
Bryn Mawr will return home to prepare for their home game against Haverford on Thursday evening in the Class at 1958 Gymnasium.
