BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team welcomed #9 Christopher Newport to Applebee Field earlier Saturday afternoon. Despite multiple other sport cancellations due to the weather and the impending storm, the teams charged through and managed to compete. Last season, the Owls gave the Captains a major upset with a 3-2 win, but today, Christopher Newport got the better of Bryn Mawr. Despite a strong effort from Bryn Mawr, Christopher Newport's defense kept the home team scoreless and the Captains won 3-0.
Highlights:
- In a surprising start to the game, Christopher Newport grabbed two goals against Bryn Mawr with goals by Madison Steele.
- At 4:19 left in the first quarter, the Owls looked for their first scoring opportunity of the game. Annick van Blerkom '26 took a penalty corner for the Owls, but no one found a shot.
- Excitement came in the third quarter, as captain Hazel Miller '25 stepped onto the field to play her first minutes of the season. Despite the limitations as she returns from an injury, Miller was excited to get off the sidelines.
- The Captains extended their lead to three in the third quarter with a goal taken by Alexis Morales.
- The Owls stepped up their offense as they entered the fourth quarter with shots taken by Eva Yacura '25, Novy Goetgeluk '26, and Maggie Barilla '26. Unfortunately, none found the back of the cage, and the Owls remained scoreless.
- In the final 20 seconds of the game, the Owls offense kept control of play, but the Captains' defense proved overwhelming and the Owls were unable to manage another scoring opportunity.
The Owls move to a 5-2 record, while the Captains remain undefeated at 7-0.
Field hockey will return to action on Wednesday to begin their Conference season against Swarthmore.
