Williams Gives Field Hockey First Loss of 2023 Season

WILLIAMSTOWN Mass., The Bryn Mawr field hockey program competed in their toughest battle of the 2023 season earlier Sunday afternoon in a 5-2 showdown at #7 Williams College. Despite Bryn Mawr grabbing the lead twice in the first half, the Williams offense changed course in the second half and managed to give the Owls' their first loss of the season.

Highlights:
  • Eva Yacura '25 scored the Owls' first goal of the game with an assist by Annick Van Blerkom '26 off a penalty corner.
  • Yacura would bring in one additional shot in the fourth quarter to hold her title as the Centennial Conference's leader in shots.
  • A minute into the second quarter, Williams Jacqui Sander scored her team's first goal of the game to tie the scoreboard 1-1.
  • The Owls looked to regain the lead with a shot by Maggie Barilla '26, but to no avail.
  • However, Bryn Mawr would not have to wait long to find another opportunity as Sophie Vagts scored her fifth goal of the season and the Owls moved the score to 2-1.
  • Basque collected a total of nine saves throughout the game, six of which were in the first half.
  • Bryn Mawr entered the second half with a one goal lead, but it was not enough to quell the Williams' offense as they managed four goals in the third and fourth quarter.
  • The Owls' relentlessness showed on Sunday as they continuously attempted to close the scoring gap.
  • Captains Sarah Chapman '24 and Novy Goetgeluk '25 each saw scoring opportunities in the second half, but none saw the back of the cage and Williams gave Bryn Mawr their first loss of the 2023 season.
Field Hockey will return to Applebee field next Saturday for their last non-conference game of the season against Christopher Newport.
