BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Bryn Mawr College Athletics announces the hiring of the new head coach of the Bryn Mawr Swim program, Arthur Wang. Wang will begin his first day on August 7, 2023.
"I'm really looking forward to learning and growing with the Owls," says Coach Wang. "My hope is to develop a supportive and competitive culture."
Wang brings over three decades of coaching experience to Bryn Mawr. Most recently, Wang spent the past two seasons as the head coach of the men's and women's swim program at McMurry University. Prior to McMurry, he spent two years as the head lead coach for Waterloo Swim Club in Austin, Texas and 16 years as the head swimming coach and Aquatics Director at SUNY Fredonia.
During his time at SUNY Fredonia, Wang led a program that had 13 individual DIII All-Americans and 22 conference champions. He also coached Fredonia's first-ever national champion, diver Kelly Sponholz, during the 2008-09 season.
Wang also had success as the assistant swim coach at Washington University in St. Louis, where his team finished second at the UAA Conference Championships and broke eight conference records. During his last year at Washington University, Wang and his coaching staff were named the 2003 UAA Coaching Staff of the Year. Additionally, Wang was named the 2003 AFLAC National Assistant of the Year.
Throughout his career, Wang has coached numerous athletes who earned Academic Honor Roll and Scholar All-America honors. He has also worked closely with both Olympic swimmers and U.S. Olympic coaches Eddie Reese, Richard Quick, and Skip Kenney.
A native of Ithaca, N.Y., Wang began his coaching career at his alma mater Ithaca College, where he spent five years as the assistant swim coach of the women's program. He also served as the assistant coach of the men's and women's swim teams at Cornell University.
Wang received a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Ithaca College in 1994, followed by a Massage Therapy License and a Teacher Certification from SUNY Cortland. Wang is also a member and committee member of the College Swim Coaches Association of America.
In addition to his coaching skills, Wang is a lifeguard training instructor and is certified in Coaching Safely, CPR/First Aid and AED. He is also fluent in the German language and semi-fluent in Chinese and French.
