WESTMINSTER, Md. –
Sloan Johnson '23 scored three goals for the fourth consecutive game and
Elizabeth Tompkins '23 made 13 saves, but a 7-1 scoring run over 35 minutes proved the difference as the McDaniel Green Terror outlasted the Bryn Mawr Owls 9-6 on Saturday in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.
Bryn Mawr drops to 5-2 in defeat while McDaniel improves to 4-4 overall with the victory.
Seeking their first win over the Green Terror in program history, the Owls took their lone lead of the game (3-2) at 3:20 into the second quarter on Johnson's second goal of the game after the teams played to a 2-2 stalemate in the opening 15 minutes.
But McDaniel rallied for the next three goals, taking a 5-3 lead with 4:55 left in the half before
Meghan O'Shea '23 answered with an unassisted goal less than a minute later.
After restoring the two-goal edge with another tally before the intermission, the Green Terror added a pair of unanswered goals in the third and opened their largest lead of the game at 9-4 with 12:15 to play.
Buoyed by a Tompkins to Johnson connection on clears, the Owls rallied with a pair of fourth quarter goals to close the deficit to 9-6, but the visitors could claw no closer before the final horn.
Despite the loss, Bryn Mawr held McDaniel to their fewest goals ever in their head-to-head matchup, and the three-goal margin was the smallest ever in the 21-game series.
Camille Franklin '24 opened the scoring with her team-leading 18
th goal of the season, the first of four free-position goals for the Owls. Tompkins, who leads the Centennial Conference in save-percentage, led all players with five ground balls while
Orli McGuire-Berk '25 and
Claire Britton '23 led all players with three caused-turnovers.
Bryn Mawr returns to the field on Tuesday as the Owls host undefeated George Fox at 4:30 PM.
