BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr tennis program opened their spring season earlier Sunday as they welcomed the Moravian Greyhounds to campus. Previously, the Owls had a strong fall season, only dropping four games throughout three matches. Almost one year ago today in 2022, the Owls suffered a heartbreaking defeat at Moravian (9-0). However, with the addition of five first-years and a graduate student to the roster, this season's results vastly differed from the last, and it was the Owls who claimed victory 7-2.
Leading up to the spring season, the Owls focused heavily on doubles, and it showed. The Owls played three strong matches, winning two. Graduate student
Nicole Lim and first-year
Sophie Fenster won at first doubles (8-2) and sophomore
Lowrey West and junior
Wynn Bryant won at second doubles (8-3). First-years
Macey Ellis and
Jill Hohmann competed in a tough match at third singles but were unable to pull out the tiebreak (8-7, 8-6).
Bryn Mawr continued their dominance in singles. One by one the Owls proudly stepped off their court, taking win after win against Moravian. First to finish was Fenster at second singles with a clean 6-1, 6-1 win followed by another win by West (6-2, 6-1). Ahead 4-1, Bryn Mawr only needed one more match to take the day.
It would be Lim, the Owls' newest member to claim victory for her team. Lim played club tennis during her time in undergrad, so today marked Lim's first varsity collegiate singles match. Competing at first singles, the left-handed Lim stepped onto court, motivated to win a second match for her team. After winning the first set, Lim took advantage of offensive opportunities and hit deep shots that allowed her to finish the point at the net and eventually win in two sets (6-0, 6-4).
Although Bryn Mawr had won the match, three Owls were still competing. Junior
Kelly Cole lost in straight sets against Greyhound Rose Lombardo (6-1, 6-3) at fifth singles, but it would be the Owls' final loss of the day. Bryant won in straight sets at third singles (6-1, 6-2), but fellow sophomore
Fernanda Hurtado's match at six singles would not be so simple to win. After losing 6-3 in the first set, Hurtado succeeded in her battle to claim the second set and bring the match into a third set tiebreak. As both teams cheered on their teammates from the sidelines, it was the Owls who prevailed and Hurtado won the tiebreak (10-5). Bryn Mawr only dropped two matches on the day and claimed victory over Moravian 7-2.
Bryn Mawr will return to action on Friday for another home match against Goucher with an expected start time of 4 P.M.
