BRYN MAWR, Pa. –Bryn Mawr tennis program welcomed Goucher to campus earlier Friday afternoon in their second home game of the spring season. Goucher currently held a two-match win streak against Bryn Mawr, winning their last two match ups in 2017 and 2019. However, today was not only the day that Bryn Mawr broke their opponent's win streak, but it was their largest margin of victory against the Gophers (8-1).
The match was delayed by an hour due to rain, but it was not long until first and second doubles team stepped off the court once the courts dried.
Sophie Fenster and
Fernanda Hurtado played first doubles, sweeping their opponents 8-5.
Wynn Bryant and
Lowrey West played second doubles, also winning 8-5. The first-year squad of
Jill Hohmann and
Macey Ellis played a fierce match but were unable to take a win and they lost 8-4.
After a quick sip of water, the day moved on to singles as the Owls lead 2-1. Fenster (6-1, 6-0) and Bryant (6-2, 6-1) at first and second singles respectively, each had a dominant. The Gophers were no match for their opponents as Fenster only dropped one game the entire match and Bryant dropped three.
Up 4-1, Bryn Mawr only needed one more match to win the day, and it was not long before six singles
Kelli Eng got the job done for the Owls. After only dropping a single game in the first set, Eng had smooth sailing in the second set, winning 6-3. Fourth singles
Kelly Cole had a tougher match, but still managed a win without dropping a set (6-4, 6-4).
Third singles West and fifth singles Hurtado were the last Owls on the court, each in a tight second set. However, it would be Hurtado who finished first. Although she had tallied a few double faults in the doubles match, Hurtado's serve was on fire by singles. After winning the first set 6-2, her opponent fought to stay in the second set, but Hurtado's pace was no match for Goucher, and she won the second set 6-4. All eyes were then on West and her Goucher opponent who had just started a third set 10-point tiebreaker. West won the first set 6-3, but was unable to close the match, dropping the second set 4-6. Although West struggled to maintain control of the second set, that was not the case for the tiebreaker, as she dominated her opponent with a 10-3 win.
Bryn Mawr won the match 8-1 and broke their opponent's series two-match win streak. The Owls now move to 2-0 in the spring season and 5-0 for the overall academic year.
The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday in their first away match against Albright.
