Owls Win First Game Of 2023 Season

Junior Camille Franklin led the Owls with four goals in the first game of the 2023 season.

ASTON, Pa. - The Owls lacrosse team opened their season against the Knights of Neumann earlier Saturday afternoon. Bryn Mawr scored the first ten goals in the contest and ultimately cruised away to a 10-1 victory on the afternoon. Junior Camille Franklin led the way for the Owls with four goals, while Maddie Sullivan scored three goals and an assist. The Owls also played some suffocating defense on the day with senior Elizabeth Tompkins making seven saves.

Bryn Mawr opened the game to a quick start. After competing in the swim conference championships only a week ago, Maddie Sullivan demonstrated her athletic prowess, scoring the first goal of the game with an assist from Chessa MacGregor. Less than a minute later, Sullivan scored again. Neither team saw another goal until the last minute of the first quarter before sophomore Camille Franklin scored her first goal of the season.

Bryn Mawr scored another four points in the second quarter. Franklin opened the quarter on a free position shot against Neumann goalie Ava Irwin to bring the Owls to a 5-0 lead. Seniors Sloan Johnson and Paige Britton were the next Owls to add to the scoreboard. Johnson returned less than two minutes later for a free position shot, but Irwin made the save. Franklin rounded out the Owls' scoring of the quarter with an assist by Sullivan to extend Bryn Mawr's lead to seven.

After returning from halftime, three Owls saw the back of the cage. Sophomore Orli McGuire-Berk opened the scoring for the half with her first goal of the season. Next, Franklin scored her fourth goal of the game to lead the Owls in goals. After a six-minute scoring dry spell, Sullivan found an opportunity and scored her third and final goal of the game to bring Bryn Mawr to a 10-0 lead. Tompkins maintained a strong defense for the Owls, tallying five saves to shut out the Knights in the first three quarters.
After two more saves in the fourth quarter, fellow senior Riley Alexander replaced Tompkins in the goal. With five minutes remaining on the clock, Brylin Adams finally scored Neumann's first goal, but by then it was too late for the Knights to mount any comeback against the stifling Bryn Mawr defense. In a strong offensive day, Bryn Mawr won their first game of the 2023 season with a score of 10-1.

The Owls will compete in three games throughout Bryn Mawr's spring break, first traveling to Maryland next Saturday to play against Notre Dame (Md.).
