Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr basketball program traveled to Swarthmore earlier on Saturday to play their second to last away game of the season. The day opened with Swarthmore's senior day, as three Garnet seniors celebrated their last regular home game. After some quick photos, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore were off to the races. Garnet senior Kim Kockenmeister would lead the scoring with 16 points, while Owls sophomore Kris Pasia led the Owls with 10 points, her first team as the leading Owl scorer this season. Bryn Mawr had a strong day at offense, tallying six three-pointers by Hannah Binder, Pasia, Ella Kotsen, and Hannah Govert. However, Swarthmore gained an extensive lead in the third quarter and with Bryn Mawr unable to make a comeback, the Garnet won on their home court (87-32).
Both defenses had a strong start with neither team seeing a basket in the opening minute of the first quarter. Although it was Garnet Colleen Anderson who made the first basket of the game, Alanna Mora-Mickens tied the game on the Owls next possession with a one-handed layup. Unfortunately, over the next minutes, the Garnet defense proved too strong for Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore took a 15-2 lead. After a Garnet made three-pointer, Hannah Binder halted Swarthmore's offensive rampage. Within one minute, Binder made a left-handed layup and a three-pointer to bring the Owls' score to seven. Pasia began her scoring with a high right-handed floater off the glass and followed up a three-pointer. The first quarter ended with Bryn Mawr trailing by 11 points (23-12).
Bryn Mawr had another strong offensive quarter in the second, earning 20 points in the next ten minutes to pass their own score from their last matchup against Swarthmore in January. Pasia opened the second quarter with another three-pointer for the Owls. This would mark the third three-pointer for the Owls with three more to go. Binder would add a layup, junior Aliya Stubenbord grabbing the assist, before a two-minute scoring dry spell for the Owls. Hannah Govert ended the scoring lull with a three pointer from the corner to bring the Owls score to 20 and the half ended with the Owls trailing by 24 points (44-20).
The Garnet defense held strong in the third quarter, the Owls unable to make a shot until the remaining minute of the quarter and Swarthmore extending their lead to 67 by the end of the third. After missing a turnaround jumper in her previous attempt to score, Binder, unwilling to record a scoreless quarter, had another chance less than a minute later. Alanna Mora-Mickens drove into the paint, but unable to see an opportunity turned to an open Binder who made her ninth point of the day. In the last seconds of the third, Pasia passed to Ella Kotsen as she ran into the paint. As the bench counted down from three, Kotsen shot a turnaround jumper for a three pointer (67-25).
Bryn Mawr opened the fourth quarter with a strong offense. Kotsen made a second three-pointer and Sena Kaper-Dale made their first basket of the game on a layup. However, over the next eight minutes, it was the Garnet offense who dominated, scoring 17 more points to earn a 57-point lead. For the second quarter in a row, it would be the Owls who found the last basket. After a steal by Swarthmore, Kotsen made her own steal near the Garnet basket. Kotsen passed to Govert who eyed an open Pasia waiting inside the paint. Without a Swarthmore player blocking her, Pasia made the Owls last points of the game to record her second-best scoring game of the season (10). Only 30 seconds left on the board, the Garnet lead was too great for an Owls comeback, and Swarthmore won the second matchup of the season (87-32).
The Owls will return on Monday evening for a home game against Gettysburg at 7:30pm.
