PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr basketball team came out with a bang in their first game of the 2023-24 season for an 84-53 win over Valley Forge earlier Thursday evening.
First-years
Michelle Jiang and
Hannah Mack lead the Owls with 18 and 17 points respectively while five Owls tallied three-pointers.
Bryn Mawr extends their record to 1-0 while Valley Forge falls to 0-2 on the season.
Highlights:
- Junior Hannah Binder scored the Owls' first points of the season on a three-point jumper, but from there the opening period remained tight. Bryn Mawr edged out a 14-13 lead at the end of the period thanks to made free throws for Mack.
- The Owls extended their lead to six shortly afterwards as junior captain Jessica Smith tipped a layup in the paint followed by another Bryn Mawr three-pointer by sophomore Hannah Govert. Valley Forge subdued Bryn Mawr's lead to one, but Binder paced the Owls with a group of free throws followed by a second three-pointer for Smith. From there, the Owls had smooth sailing to wrap the first half with a 15 point lead, 41-26.
- Bryn Mawr recorded 16 points from the bench in the third period as the Owls' starting crew extended the lead to 23. Jiang paced Bryn Mawr with eight points followed by a basket apiece by Maddie Seward and Cameron Richter.
- Bryn Mawr's first-years held on to the Owls' lead for the remainder of the game as Jiang tallied her third and fourth three-pointer of the evening while Richter, Maya Mehta, and Mack each recording buckets of their own to earn Bryn Mawr's first victory of the season.
The Owls will return on Saturday for a 2pm away game at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
