ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Bryn Mawr junior midfielder
Novy Goetgeluk scored on a penalty corner in overtime to end the Owls losing streak in a 2-1 victory over Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference field hockey action Wednesday evening.
The Owls improved to 6-4 on the year and 1-2 versus Centennial Conference foes. Muhlenberg fell to 4-6 on the year and 1-3 in Centennial Conference action.
Lauren Barlow and
Eva Yacura each had an assist in the game, while
Francesca McCaughey and
Hazel Miller each had two shots on goal.
Highlights:
- The first quarter was evenly matched with much of the action taking place in the middle of the field. Both teams had one shot apiece, which included a shot on goal by Owl Reba Ervin.
- Dominating possession early in the second quarter, Muhlenberg Erin DiSandro began the scoring at 21:35 to take a 1-0 lead.
- Head Coach Victor Brady subbed in goalkeeper Peri Mulvany at the start of the second half for the first-year's debut Conference game with the Owls. Mulvany was a brick wall for the Owls, stopping two shots, including one from a penalty corner.
- Bryn Mawr dominated the fourth quarter, outshooting Muhlenberg 7-0 and tallying seven penalty corners.
- Muhlenberg continued to lead the scoreboard 1-0 until the last five minutes of the final stanza. Lauren Barlow had control inside the circle, but unable to see a scoring opportunity, she passed it back to Goetgeluk who had a clear shot into the back of the cage to tie the game 1-1.
- The scoreboard remained tied in regulation and the teams entered overtime.
- Two minutes into overtime, Ervin took her second shot of the game, but it was blocked by a Muhlenberg defender.
- Seconds later, Muhlenberg received a foul and Annick van Blerkom took the corner for the Owls.
- Eva Yacura redirected from van Blerkom into the hands of Goetgeluk who shot from just outside of the cage for the game winning goal for the Owls, and Goetgeluk's second goal of the night.
The Owls moved to 2-0 in overtime games this season while Goetgeluk improves to five goals this season and 10 in her career with the Owls.
Bryn Mawr will return home on Saturday for a Conference match-up against Dickinson.
