BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team had a momentous game against #24 Ursinus earlier Wednesday afternoon for a 4-0 victory, and the program's first win against the Bears since 1950.
Three of the Owls' goals were scored in the first quarter by
Eva Yacura,
Maggie Barilla, and
Thekla Jubinville with assists by
Ilona Bender and
Hazel Miller. Junior captain
Novy Goetgeluk rounded out the Owls' scoring with an assist by Yacura.
Bryn Mawr solidifies a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament as they move to a 6-4 Conference record and 11-6 overall.
Highlights:
- Bryn Mawr controlled the offense with four shots in the opening minutes of the game before Ursinus had a single shot opportunity.
- On the Owls' fourth shot at 11:07, Yacura scored the Owls' first goal of the game from the top of the circle with an assist by Bender to take a 1-0 lead over the Bears.
- The Owls' second goal was recorded at 12:55 after Bryn Mawr earned a penalty stroke. Barilla faced off against the Bear's goalkeeper Adriana Palladinetti and extended the Owls' lead to 2-0.
- Less than a minute later, Bryn Mawr notched their third goal within four minutes. On a penalty corner taken by Van Blerkom, Yacura tipped in her fifth goal of the season off an assist by Miller.
- Bryn Mawr's offense went quiet in the second quarter, but a strong defense kept the Owls at a 3-0 scoreboard to enter halftime.
- The Owls' offense returned eager to extend their lead as they entered the field for the third quarter, but it would not be until a second penalty corner called at 45:00 that the Owls would have success. With zero time remaining in the quarter, the Owls had one last chance to score. Van Blerkom sent the insert to Yacura who found Goetgeluk on her left, and a loud rattle on the back of the cage signaled the Owls' fourth goal of the afternoon.
- Bryn Mawr and Ursinus each had one scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter, but a save by both teams' goalkeepers kept the scoreboard at 4-0 to solidify a decisive victory for the Owls.
The Bryn Mawr field hockey team will compete in their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Applebee Field before the start of the Centennial Conference Championships on October 31
