Owls Best Washington College in a 2-1 Victory

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Junior Charlotte Hauptman scored twice in the first half to help the Bryn Mawr field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Centennial Conference opponent Washington College earlier Wednesday afternoon in Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.

Bryn Mawr improved to an 8-6 overall record, 3-4 in conference play, while Washington College dropped to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in conference.

Sophomore Sophie Vagts and junior captain Novy Goetgeluk earned assists on the day.

Highlights:
  • The Shorewomen opened the scoring with a goal by Samantha McMahon after she took possession from an Owl defender and struck into the left side of the cage.
  • Izzy Robinson-Cloete looked to even up the scoreboard at 12:13, but her attempt was saved by Shorewomen goalkeeper Charlotte Schurman.
  • With just over a minute remaining in the first quarter, Charlotte Hauptman tied the game 1-1 as she tipped the shot into the mouth of the cage after a cross by Sophie Vagts.
  • The Owls' offense took five shots on goal in the second quarter while their defense kept the Shorewomen to a single scoring opportunity which was blocked.
  • Bryn Mawr's fifth shot on goal proved just what the Owls needed. Junior captain Hazel Miller took a shot off a penalty corner taken by Annick van Blerkom, but it was kicked away by the Shorewomen's goalkeeper. Novy Goetgeluk reflected the kick to Hauptman and earned Bryn Mawr a 2-1 lead.
  • In the third quarter, the Owls had six scoring opportunities with shots on goal by Eva Yacura, Sarah Chapman, Robinson-Cloete and Miller, but all were saved and the scoreboard remained 2-1.
  • Three shots were taken in the fourth quarter, two of which were by the Shorewomen, but all were sent wide, and the Owls won the day 2-1.
The Bryn Mawr field hockey team will travel to Gettysburg this Saturday for a 1:00pm start time.
