Bryn Mawr Battles Past LVC to Win Third Straight

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Bryn Mawr field hockey hit the road once again earlier Wednesday night, as the Owls looked for their third win to open the season with a non-conference matchup at Lebanon Valley. It took a little bit for the Owls' offense to get rolling, but Bryn Mawr controlled the game most of the way through en route to a 3-1 victory on the night. Three different players scored for the Owls on the night with Rosa Cochran getting the game-winner early in the fourth quarter. Maggie Titus made one save on just two opportunities as the Owls defense did a great job limiting the offensive chances for the Dutchmen.

Bryn Mawr had a chance to get the scoring started very early in the contest, as the Owls earned a penalty corner just 2:25 into play. That resulted in a shot for Annick van Blerkom, but her effort was blocked before it got to the cage. A little later, Thekla Jubinville got Bryn Mawr's first shot on goal of the day, but LVC's Kayleigh Kmet made the save. The play resulted in another penalty corner for the Owls, but a shot from Eva Yacura was once again blocked by the Dutchmen defense. The Owls kept the pressure on, earning two more penalty corners and taking three more shots before the midway point of the first quarter. Later on in the frame, Bryn Mawr earned another corner and two more shots, including an effort from Eva Yacura that forced Kmet into another save with under a minute to play in the period. However, despite outshooting the Dutchmen 8-0 in the opening frame, Bryn Mawr was unable to push a goal across and the game remained scoreless through one period.

The Owls started off the second quarter in a similar fashion to the first, earning a penalty corner and getting a shot off in the first four minutes of action in the new frame. However, after that opportunity, the second quarter evolved into a midfield battle for both sides. Lebanon Valley was able to finally break out of their end for a bit and keep the ball in the middle of the field. Neither side had any great opportunities over the next six minutes, but Bryn Mawr finally broke the seal on the scoring with just over five minutes to go in the frame.

Renewing their attack, the Owls worked the ball down the left side of the field, with Yacura driving hard into the circle at the end of her run. The sophomore fired a pass across the face of goal to a wide-open teammate on the far post. With defenders scrambling back to cover the cage, Lebanon Valley committed a foul right in front of the empty net, leading to a penalty stroke opportunity for the Owls. Kate Ervin stepped up to take the chance and did so beautifully, calmly lifting the ball high into the top left corner to give Bryn Mawr a 1-0 advantage. Lebanon Valley and Bryn Mawr would each get one more penalty corner and a shot apiece over the final minutes of the second quarter, but the remaining opportunities went begging, allowing the Owls to take their lead into the halftime break.

That halftime break proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the Dutchmen, as the hosts came out flying in the third quarter. Lebanon Valley outshot the Owls 6-1 in the third period and outcornered them as well. The Dutchmen continued to pour the pressure on over the duration of the period until they finally broke through to tie the game up with less than two minutes to go in the frame, as a centering pass from the left baseline deflected off an Owls stick and into the back of the cage to make it a 1-1 contest.

Suddenly facing a little more adversity from an enlivened home crowd, Bryn Mawr simply kept their heads down and went back to work in the fourth quarter. That resolve paid off almost immediately, as Bryn Mawr retook their advantage just over two minutes into the frame. The Owls earned a quick penalty corner and were able to get a couple of shots off on the opportunity, both of which were saved by Kmet. However, the second rebound went straight to an Owl in front of the cage, and it seemed as if she would be able to force home the go-ahead goal. Once again, a Lebanon Valley player was forced into an infraction right in front of the cage, giving Bryn Mawr their second penalty stroke of the contest. This time it was Rosa Cochran who came up clutch, ripping a hard shot to the left of Kmet and into the back of the net to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

Bryn Mawr was not done yet either, as the Owls would come right back down the field for another penalty corner just over a minute later. The Owls sent the ball in to the top right of the circle to Novy Goetgeluk on the insertion. The sophomore deftly took the pass and dribbled around an onrushing LVC defender, slicing in further towards the cage. With another defender coming out to meet her, Goetgeluk sent a brilliant centering pass to her left where Hazel Miller was waiting all alone. The fellow sophomore quickly redirected the ball through traffic and into the back of the cage, doubling Bryn Mawr's advantage and giving the Owls all the breathing room they would need. Lebanon Valley tried to mount a comeback, but Bryn Mawr silenced the Dutchmen attack the rest of the way to preserve the 3-1 victory.

With the win, Bryn Mawr moves to 3-0 on the young season, their best start to a campaign since the 2019 season. The Owls will be back in action on Saturday looking to extend that streak at home, as they are set to face off against York on Applebee Field at 1:00 PM.
