Owls Thump Gettysburg for Big Homecoming Win

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team put together another historic performance earlier Saturday afternoon in front of a packed Homecoming crowd on Applebee Field. The Owls played one of their best all-around games in program history, dismantling Centennial Conference foes Gettysburg to the tune of 6-0 by the end of the game. Hazel Miller scored four goals in the contest for the Owls, making her just the second Bryn Mawr field hockey player to achieve that feat in recorded program history. The margin of victory is also the largest that Bryn Mawr has ever posted in a Centennial Conference field hockey contest.

The Owls were out front early, scoring the opening goal just three minutes into the contest. Bryn Mawr worked the ball into the offensive third along the right sideline, where Thekla Jubinville took control. The junior took the ball down the right side and near the circle by the endline before firing a hard cross in front of the cage. The pass had plenty of pace on it, and a Gettysburg defender stepped just in front of a wide open Hazel Miller to break up the connection. However, the ball skipped off of the player's stick and snuck inside the post and into the back of the cage, putting the hosts ahead 1-0 right out of the gate.

Bryn Mawr immediately pounced on a somewhat shocked Bullets squad, adding their first insurance goal of the contest just over a minute later. Gettysburg tried to pass their way out of the defensive third, but a backwards pass from a back skipped off the stick of a teammate and headed straight for the top of the circle. Miller was the first to get to the loose ball, and the sophomore knew exactly what to do with it. She took two touches to settle the ball and circle around to her forehand before firing a laser of a shot past Gettysburg's goalkeeper and into the back of the cage to double the Owls lead.

The Owls were not content to just sit back and defend from there. After weathering the first Gettysburg chance of the game, a penalty corner late in the first quarter that the Bryn Mawr defense blocked up, the Owls came out and grabbed another two goals early in the second period. Miller would start the scoring in the frame, redirecting a long shot from Kate Ervin straight into the back of the cage to make it 3-0. Then a couple minutes later, Lauren Barlow netted her first career goal, collecting a rebound off of a blocked shot by Eva Yacura and sending the ball straight into the back of the cage to give the Owls their four-goal lead before halftime.

With the Owls defense continuing to pitch a shutout well into the second half, the Bryn Mawr offense continued to add on. Midway through the third quarter, Jubinville made another nice run down the right side, getting all the way to the endline again before firing a cross into the circle. The ball sailed through the legs of several players and right to a waiting Miller at the far post. Miller easily collected and swept the ball into the wide-open cage to make it a 5-0 Owls lead.

Bryn Mawr closed out the scoring with one last goal in the fourth period, with Miller completing her quad with more great work right in front of the cage. This time it was Charlotte Hauptman doing the delivering, centering a pass from the low right side of the circle into the mix in front. Miller managed to collect the bouncing ball and fight through a defender and the Gettysburg goalkeeper, jamming the ball home between them to complete the 6-0 win.

Miller now leads the Centennial Conference in both goals (8) and points (19) this season. Maggie Titus and Charlene Basque combined for seven saves in the contest to post Bryn Mawr's fourth shutout of the season.

The Owls will look to keep things rolling as Centennial Conference play continues next week with a pair of road trips. Bryn Mawr will take on Bi-College rival Haverford on Wednesday evening with that matchup against the Fords slated for a 5:30 PM start at Haverford. Then, the Owls will face off against Dickinson on the road on Saturday, October 1.
