Box Score The Bryn Mawr field hockey program's three game win streak came to a halt at Saturday's game against York (Pa.). Owls goalkeeper Maggie Titus played a strong defensive game with six saves in the first two quarters and one in the last quarter. However, York proved to be a strong competitor for the previously undefeated Owls, as the visitors claimed a 5-0 win at the end of the day.
The first quarter turned out to be the toughest and most exciting part of the game for both Bryn Mawr and York. The Spartans scored two goals right out of the gate, but after that the Owls kicked up their offensive game to take possession of the ball and drive play to the opponent's side of the field. After a battle at the York goalpost, first-year Annick van Blerkom took the first penalty corner hit of the game, looking to take the insert to get her team on the scoreboard. Van Blerkom passed the ball to Bryn Mawr's leading scorer of the season Eva Yacura, who double hit the ball, followed by a York player shoving her stick on the ground, forcing the referees to call for another corner to be taken.
Van Blerkom hit the penalty corner for a second time, once again passing the ball to Yacura. This time Yacura fed the ball to sophomore Novy Goetgeluk who quickly attempted to blast the ball into the net, but to no avail as York's goalie, Kaitlyn Wallace, saved the shot. However, the play was not quite over as junior Thekla Jubinville obtained possession of the ball. In what had already seemed like a whirlwind game in just the first quarter, the referees called a third penalty corner.
Once again, Van Blerkom hit the corner to teammate Yacura, who this time passed the ball to sophomore Lillith Weinlick. Weinlick's shot dove under the legs of a York player, was blocked by the Spartan goalie, and rocketed into the air before the whistle was eventually blown for York to take possession of the ball after a penalty on the Owls.
York proved to be the stronger team throughout the next three quarters, scoring an additional three goals. Yet, one more opportunity arose for the Owls in the last few seconds of the game, as a penalty corner was called in favor of the Owls. Taking advantage of their last chance to stop the game from ending in a shutout, Annick van Blerkom hit the Owls' last corner of the game, inserting the ball to Yacura. After the blow of the horn, Yacura passed the ball to teammate Maggie Barilla, but in a surprising finish a foul was called, and the game ended in a win for York 5-0. Both teams now have a 3-1 nonconference record.
Bryn Mawr will return to their home turf on Wednesday, September 14 to compete against Delaware Valley.
