Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls basketball team kicked off their final week of action earlier Monday evening with another home showdown as Ursinus came to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium for the second matchup between these two teams in five days. It was a tight affair in the first quarter, as both teams played strong defense throughout the opening period. Unfortunately for the Owls, the rest of the game went the way of the visitors, as Ursinus put up 53 points across the middle two quarters to ultimately claim an 80-27 victory on the night. Sydney Collins and Hannah Binder led Bryn Mawr with seven points apiece, with Collins dominating inside defensively as well thanks to a career-high three blocks in the contest. The Bears got 16 points from Natalie Mehl on the night, with the sophomore guard knocking down four threes en route to her team-leading performance.
The visitors got on the board right out of the gate, with Mehl drilling a three-ball just 20 seconds into the contest. Bryn Mawr did not let that get them down though, as the Owls responded nicely with a pair of jumpers from Ella Kotsen and Collins to take a 4-3 advantage. After a few strong defensive stops, Bryn Mawr increased their lead even further as Aliya Stubenbord earned a trip to the free throw line and split the pair. Ursinus ended another extended dry spell with a layup from Chinwe Irondi midway through the quarter, which knotted things back up at five. After a few more empty possessions from both teams, the Bears regained the lead on another three-pointer, this time from Alison Lisanti. However, the Owls tied things right back up on a deep three from Stubenbord. Ursinus continued to launch threes of their own as the quarter continued, and Kelly Grant finally knocked down a third for the Bears to give the visitors the lead once more. A quick timeout helped give the Owls a breather, and that led to a great basket from Binder just before the quarter ended, making it a slim 11-10 lead for the Bears at the first break.
Unfortunately for Bryn Mawr, things went south for the Owls in the second quarter. Ursinus would put up 22 points on the offensive end while holding the Owls to just one basket, a layup from Collins midway through the quarter. The halftime break didn't help Bryn Mawr out much either, as Ursinus went on to outscore the Owls 31-4 in the third period as well. When the dust finally settled, the Bears held a 64-16 advantage at the start of the fourth quarter.
That final frame would provide some semblance of a recovery for the Owls, as the team kicked off the quarter with a layup from Binder. After a few empty possessions, Kotsen earned a trip to the charity stripe and promptly sank both free throws, getting the Owls to 20. Stubenbord and Binder each put home layups midway through the quarter, sandwiched around a free throw from Sonja Meijer, and then Meijer made a nice drive to the hoop for a layup of her own on an assist by Stubenbord. Those would be the final points of the contest for the Owls, and Ursinus managed to coast away to the 80-27 win.
Bryn Mawr will close out their current homestand with one final game in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The Owls will welcome Johns Hopkins to town for a battle against the Blue Jays on Wednesday before closing out the 2021-22 season with trips to Swarthmore on Thursday and Dickinson on Saturday.
