Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Owls basketball team kept their busy schedule rolling on Thursday with a road trip to Ursinus for another Centennial Conference showdown. With both sides looking for a big win, it was the Bears who came out victorious on the day, using a big double-double from Chinwe Irondi and another 13 points from Gabby Downs to take a 66-32 win on the night. The Owls battled hard all four quarters, including a strong third-quarter effort that saw the team come up just one point short of the Bears in the frame. Sydney Collins led the way for Bryn Mawr with nine points while Hannah Binder added another eight on the night.
Ursinus took the lead right from the tip, as Downs buried a three-pointer just 15 seconds into the game. However, Bryn Mawr came up with an immediate response, as Sydney Collins grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed shot and sent home the putback to get the Owls on the board. The two teams continued to trade baskets early on, with Bianca Carrizal knocking down a jumper and Collins splitting a pair of free throws to keep the Owls within one. Then after a defensive stop, Bryn Mawr took the lead for themselves thanks to a jumper from Hannah Binder off of a feed by Carrizal. Ursinus responded with a couple baskets of their own, but Collins hit another jumper later in the quarter to keep Bryn Mawr within one.
Unfortunately for the Owls, the hosts would go on a 23-4 run over the remaining 11 minutes of the first half. Aliya Stubenbord got in on the scoring for the Owls with their lone basket of the second quarter, and Hallie Kern and Ella Kotsen would each hit a free throw in the frame. Irondi put up a spectacular performance for Ursinus in the quarter though, as the first-year forward went 5-for-5 from the floor and tallied 13 points in that period alone. By the time halftime rolled around, the Bears held a commanding 33-13 advantage.
The Owls responded much better after the halftime break, as the team put together their best offensive performance in the third quarter. Collins continued her great post play, making the first two baskets of the period for the Owls. After a defensive stop, Sonja Meijer got a basket of her own. Ursinus put together a little run to extend their advantage, but Binder grabbed an offensive board and stuck the putback to get the Owls rolling again. Then in the final minute, Stubenbord drilled a deep three-pointer and then made an excellent pass to Meijer for another basket. Ultimately, Bryn Mawr's impressive showing in the frame meant Ursinus gained just one point on the Owls in the quarter.
However, the fourth quarter was a different story, as this time it was Ursinus who put on their best offensive showing of the contest. The Bears shot 43% from the field in the frame and made a trio of three-pointers en route to 19 points in the quarter. On the other end, Binder made a couple more baskets and Kotsen and Carrizal knocked down two more free throws, but the Owls couldn't get anything else going offensively, and Ursinus claimed a 66-32 win on the night.
Bryn Mawr will be right back in action on Saturday, as the Owls will return home for a three-game homestand. First up is a contest against Swarthmore in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium. This will be the first of two contests against the Garnet in less than a week, with Saturday's contest set to tip off at 1:00 PM in Bryn Mawr.
