Owls Put Together Strong Second Half Against Haverford

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr basketball program welcomed Haverford to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium on Wednesday evening for another home game. Jess Smith tallied 14 points for her fifth consecutive game with over 10 points made. Fellow sophomore Sena Kaper-Dale shot a seven-point game, their top scoring game since November.  However, the fast pace of Haverford's offense proved problematic for the Owls and the Fords took home the win 66-26.

The Fords' offense was off to a quick start as Cortlyn Morris and Kayla Robinson made the first 10 points without Bryn Mawr seeing a basket. At the sixth minute, Kaper-Dale made the Owls' first two points to end the Ford's streak. However, this would prove to become the Owls only points of the quarter. Haverford took an early 20-2 lead.

The second quarter was again on the Ford's side. Gia Flamini led the scoreboard to give Haverford an additional seven points along with teammates Robinson, Ally Landau, and Abby Ryan who added a few points of their own. Smith was not willing to allow the Owls' dry spell to continue. After reentering the game at 8:28 in the quarter, Smith made a jump shot followed by a made free throw and an additional jump shot to bring Bryn Mawr's total to seven by the end of the quarter.

The Owls had a strong run halfway into the third quarter. Kaper-Dale made an offensive rebound from Smith's missed jump shot. Concurrent with Kaper-Dale's own shot, a foul was called on Haverford. Thankfully for Bryn Mawr, the shot found its way into the basket and the sophomore made their first points of the game. Kaper-Dale's made free throw brought the Owls' score to 14. Smith and Kaper-Dale would tag team the next four points as each made a jump shot for Bryn Mawr. Although the Owls played a strong quarter, they were outshot by the Fords and the quarter stood 52-18 with Haverford in the lead.

In the fourth quarter, Smith led her team in points scored. She made the first five points for the Owls and hit her fifth consecutive game with over 10 points made. Kris Pasia and Aliya Stubenbord made their first baskets of the game later in the remaining minutes to bring the Owls' score to 26. However, it was the Fords of Haverford who prevailed (66-26).

Bryn Mawr will take to the road to Bryn Athyn on Friday for their last game before taking a break for the winter holidays.
