Box Score CHESTERTOWN, MD. – The Owls basketball team kicked off a busy week of action Tuesday evening with their first contest following the Thanksgiving break. Bryn Mawr traveled to Washington College for another key Centennial Conference matchup in the Penny J. Fall Gym, with the Owls looking to pick up their first league win of the season. Although the Owls managed to make a small comeback after being down at the end of the first half, Bryn Mawr was unable to recover the deficit and the Shorewomen took a 65-39 victory. Jess Smith led all scorers with 17 points for the Owls and Hannah Govert scored two of Bryn Mawr's four three-pointers of the game.
The Shorewomen won the opening tip and immediately got on the scoreboard thanks to a layup from Joy Sanders that would spark a 7-0 run to start the contest for the home team. Ella Kotsen finally got the visitors on the board via a free throw. Smith followed up with a jumper for her first points of the night and Hannah Binder scored Bryn Mawr's first three-pointer less than a minute later. However, from there the Shorewomen went on another six-point run until Aliya Stubenbord made her first jumper of the season to halt the home team's streak. Washington made an additional layup and free throw to end the quarter 20-9.
Washington took control of the second quarter as Smith was the only Owl to find the basket before the end of the half. Smith scored nine of her 17 points in the second quarter, but it was not quite enough to make a dent in the Shorewomen's lead as the home team added another 24 points to the scoreboard. Washington ended the quarter with a 44-18 lead.
After a tough start, the Owls were able to make much better headway in the middle of the third quarter. After falling behind 51-18 in the quarter, Hannah Govert scored a three-pointer for Bryn Mawr. This began a string of made baskets for the Owls. Smith made two free throws, soon followed by a jumper. Stubenbord added an additional two-points and Govert scored her second three-pointer of the night. In the last 30 seconds of the quarter, Stubenbord assisted Kris Pasia on a jumper to minimize Bryn Mawr's deficit to 57-32.
The fourth frame proved to be low scoring for both teams as the defenses stood strong. Assisted by Sonja Meijer, Ella Kotsen made a nice layup to give the Owls their first points of the quarter. In the last three minutes of the game, Pasia scored a three-pointer and Smith recorded her 17th point of the game. Although the Owls' defense only allowed the Shorewomen to add eight points in the fourth quarter, Washington's lead was too great, and the Owls fell 65-39.
Bryn Mawr will have to shake off the tough result from tonight quickly, as they will be right back in action on Thursday evening for another away game. The Owls will travel to Franklin & Marshall for another important Centennial Conference contest, with gametime on December 1 set for 7:00 PM.
