Owls Suffer First Loss of the Season

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Bryn Mawr played their first road game of the season on Tuesday evening against Immaculata, the defending Atlantic East Champions. The Owls looked to extend their two-game win streak and take a third. However, the Mighty Macs' strong offense and the Owls' low scoring led to a 71-25 Immaculata victory.

The Owls found the first bucket of the night thanks to a layup from Centennial Conference Player of the Week Jess Smith. But Bryn Mawr's two-point lead did not last long. Erin Kelly and Meghan Ricker of Immaculata worked together to bring the ball down court and tie the game at 2-2. After the Mighty Macs made another two layups, sophomore Hannah Binder finally found the basket to reduce the lead to two. Although Immaculata added 17 points to their board, the Owls only managed to score one additional point off a free throw before Immaculata closed the quarter at 23-5.

The second quarter did not fare much better for the Owls. Bryn Mawr had a few scoring opportunities, but only managed to add four points to the board. The hands of the Mighty Macs' defense were always ready, claiming eight steals throughout the rest of the half and neutralizing the Owls offense. When the buzzer sounded to end the half, the Owls found themselves trailing 9-45.

The Owls' offense came alive during the third quarter, while the defense held strong and only allowed the Mighty Mac's to add 11 points to the scoreboard. After more than five minutes had elapsed without an Owls' bucket, senior Sydney Collins finally added another two points. The senior made an offensive rebound and the defender fouled her on the floor. Fellow senior Ella Kotsen found an open Collins who quickly lofted a lay up to break the dry spell. Sophomore Hannah Binder was next to find the basket for the Owls. Sophomore Sena Kaper-Dale looked to shoot a layup, but it was tipped by Immaculata Erin Kelly and went out of bounds. Senior Alanna Mora-Mickens passed to an open Binder who was patiently waiting behind the right side of the arc. Taking advantage of her six-foot height, she leapt high into the air and shot over the defender's reach to score her first three-pointer of the evening. Before the buzzer signaled the end of the quarter, first-year Hannah Govert scored another three-pointer for Bryn Mawr. Junior Aliya Stubenbord rebounded an Immaculata's miss and brought it down the length of the court to a waiting Govert, who received the ball right where Binder had made her three. Govert quickly turned and sank the jumper to give the Owls some offensive momentum.

Bryn Mawr entered the fourth quarter in a deep hole trailing by 39 points. However, the Owls were not willing to give up without a fight. Collins was first to score for the Owls early in the final frame. After a missed jumper by teammate Smith, Collins rebounded the ball and immediately shot a layup to bring Bryn Mawr to 19 points. Similar to Collins, Binder rebounded an Owls' missed attempt and shot a one-handed lay-up. Following an Immaculata jumper, Stubenbord returned the ball to Bryn Mawr's offensive end, but when she was unable to find an open teammate, she looked for her own opportunity to shoot. After a pump fake, Stubenbord drove down the lane, forcing Immaculata to double-team her and leaving Binder wide open just beyond the arc. Stubenbord managed to find Binder with a quick pass, and she turned and drained the jump shot. Bryn Mawr managed one final shot before the last buzzer of the night. Stubenbord took the ball down court and swung a pass to Mora-Mickens, who found junior Sonja Meijer at the top of the key. Driving down the paint towards the baseline, Meijer rolled a lay-up into the basket for her first two points of the evening and the last points for Bryn Mawr. The Owls put in a strong effort, but Immaculata took a convincing win, 71-25.

The Owls will return on Saturday to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium to play their first conference match-up of the season against McDaniel.
