Owls Advance to Semifinals After 4-0 Win Against Haverford

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls welcomed Haverford to campus on Tuesday for the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs. Eva Yacura, Thekla Jubinville, and Maggie Barilla each scored goals to knock the Fords out of the playoffs. This week also marked the sixth week in a row that the program received votes in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll.

The first quarter was off to a quick start as Yacura took Bryn Mawr's first two shots within seven minutes of the game. After missing her first shot wide, Yacura took a second shot at 6:32. However, it hit teammate Hazel Miller's foot and the Fords were given possession of the ball. Three minutes later, Haverford took two shots in quick succession, but goalkeeper Maggie Titus stopped the Fords from scoring. The Fords continued to take shots throughout the rest of the quarter, but none landed Haverford on the scoreboard.

The second quarter began knotted at 0-0. The Fords' offense attempted to take an early lead almost immediately after the ball was put in play. Rachel Marlin took a shot for Haverford only a minute into the second quarter, however it went wide, and the score remained tied at 0-0. Neither team had a shot opportunity over the next five minutes, trading possession every few passes. However, at 22:06 Yacura brought the ball down the field towards the Ford's goal. Yacura shot the ball high, and it was found by teammate Thekla Jubinville. To the crowds' excitement, Jubinville stuck up her stick and deflected it straight into the net. Her goal marked the program's first ever goal in a playoff game. The half ended without additional shots from either team, the Owls leading 1-0.

Bryn Mawr immediately took possession of the ball at the beginning of the third quarter. The Owls received a penalty corner, taken by Annick van Blerkom, within the first minute. However, the corner did not result in an offensive opportunity for the Owls, as Haverford's defense stood firm. Haverford took their own penalty corner two minutes later, but Titus saved the shot coming her way. Van Blerkom took Bryn Mawr's second penalty corner of the quarter at 35:40. After receiving the corner, Novy Goetgeluk took her opportunity to shoot, but it was saved by Haverford's goalie. Less than four minutes later, the Owls had another opportunity to extend their lead. Sophie Vagts took the ball from the Fords at midfield, quickly giving the ball to Miller who took it down the turf. Eyeing Yacura standing in front of the Fords' goalkeeper, Miller made a pass to an open Yacura, who turned around and shot to extend the Owls' lead to two. Kate Ervin took one last shot for the Owls to end the quarter, but it went wide.

The beginning of the fourth quarter looked to be in Haverford's favor. Less than four minutes in, the Fords were given a penalty stroke. Only a shooter, Haverford's Delaney Snowden, and Owls goalkeeper Maggie Titus stood front and center. Snowden veered up and shot towards the lefthand corner of the net. However, Titus threw herself at the shot, thwarted it, and the score remained at 2-0. Haverford took two shots to Bryn Mawr's one over the next six minutes.

With only three minutes remaining in the game, it appeared that Haverford managed to stop Bryn Mawr from extending their lead. However, the Owls were not done yet. Yacura scored her second goal of the game and 10th of the season after receiving a penalty corner taken by teammate van Blerkom. Yacura's shot soared past five charging Haverford players, and the Owls extended their lead to three. Only a minute later, the Owls were back again. Similar to the previous shot, van Blerkom took another penalty corner, but this time directed it towards Maggie Barilla. Barilla's shot was untouched by all five Haverford players, putting Bryn Mawr ahead 4-0 and solidifying their victory. The game ended shortly thereafter, Owls 4, Haverford 0.

Tuesday's win marks Bryn Mawr field hockey program's first playoff win in history and the fifth consecutive win against Haverford.

The Owls will travel to Lancaster, Pa. on Thursday evening to compete in the semifinals against Franklin & Marshall.
