Owls Set Multiple Records in Dominant Conference Win

Box Score

The Bryn Mawr field hockey program had a momentous win on Thursday in a Conference match-up against Washington College, scoring the most goals and achieving the largest margin of victory in any conference game in Bryn Mawr history.

Bryn Mawr's offense exploded early in the first quarter, demonstrating their prowess with a goal four minutes into the game. The Owls gained possession of the ball around the midline, driving it towards the Washington net. The goalkeeper attempted to corral the ball in front of the net, but forward Kate Ervin seized on the opportunity and scored on the open goal, her first of the game. Bryn Mawr and Washington each took one more shot during the quarter, but neither came to fruition, and the quarter ended with the Owls in the lead (1-0).

The Owls scored their second goal after a penalty corner play around 17:21 in the second quarter. Annick van Blerkom passed the ball to teammate Kate Ervin, who shot it past the goalkeeper for Bryn Mawr's second goal.

Washington College appeared to have woken up after Bryn Mawr's second goal, as the Shorewomen became the aggressors for the remainder of the quarter. Around 21:59, Kat Esposito of Washington College drove the ball towards Bryn Mawr's net, passing Owls' goalkeeper Maggie Titus. Just a few minutes later, Washington College scored their second goal of the game by Anna Harrington, her second for the season.

Bryn Mawr and Washington College were tied 2-2 to begin the third quarter, but half-time proved to be exactly what the doctor ordered for the Owls. After only two minutes had elapsed, Bryn Mawr set up for their third goal. Eva Yacura hit a strong ball past the midfield to Sarah Chapman. Nearing the net, Chapman passed the ball to Kate Ervin. Players from both teams crowded the net, but Ervin was able to get the shot through the line of defenders and into the net. Leading 3-2, Bryn Mawr scored their fourth goal less than three minutes later. Eva Yacura brought the ball into the circle and took a shot towards the opponent's net. Chapman was able to deflect it just in time, the ball barely touching her stick before going into the net.

Owls added on one additional goal by Charlotte Hauptman, assisted by Lauren Barlow, before the quarter ended (5-2).

The Owls scored three more goals in the last quarter. Hazel Miller took one for the team as she lunged to the ground to keep the ball close to the net. Both teams fought for the ball, but the Owls reaped the benefits of Hazel's hard work, as Kate Ervin scored another goal to further Bryn Mawr's lead to 6-2. This was Ervin's fourth goal of the game, making Bryn Mawr history as she tied with Miller for the most goals in a single game.

Around 56:01, Bryn Mawr huddled together before Annick van Blerkom jogged across the field to take a penalty corner. Bryn Mawr charged the net, and after a quick tussle, Hazel Miller passed to a nearby Sarah Chapman. Chapman then shot the ball into the back of the net for Bryn Mawr's seventh goal.

One last goal occurred before the end of the game. At 57:54, Annick van Blerkom took a penalty corner. Van Blerkom hit the ball to Rosa Cochran and deflected off her stick straight towards Izzy Robinson-Cloete. Robinson-Cloete took her opportunity and launched the ball directly into the back of the net. Washington attempted to take one more goal during the last quarter, but it never came to fruition. The last whistle drew an end to an incredible game by the Bryn Mawr Owls, led by a tremendous four-goal offensive showing by Kate Ervin.

The Owls will fly high tonight as the team celebrates their historical victory. Bryn Mawr takes a break this weekend and returns on Wednesday, October 12th for an evening game at Ursinus.
