Box Score
BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Johns Hopkins scored midway through the second quarter and held off the Bryn Mawr Owls Field Hockey team in a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
Hopkins finishes the regular season 10-0 in Centennial Conference play and 14-3 overall, while Bryn Mawr finishes 7-3 in Conference and 13-4 overall. With the shutout, the Blue Jays completed their perfect Centennial schedule without allowing a single goal.
Both teams had already locked in their Centennial Conference Tournament seeds prior to Saturday, and Bryn Mawr was ready for the pressure of Hopkins, ranked fifth in last week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Poll.
Maggie Titus made a pair of early saves in goal for Bryn Mawr, and midway through the first period, the Owls had one of their best chances of their afternoon as Novy Goetgeluk ran past the Hopkins defenders up the left side of the circle and pulled around goalkeeper Morgan Seward. But her backhand shot was saved on the line by Liz Falterer, and a pair of late shots in the period failed to put the Owls ahead.
In the 22nd minute, Johns Hopkins pulled ahead as defending Region V Player of the Year Abby Birk one-timed a slip from Sadie Abboud to the right of Titus on a penalty corner. Hopkins outshot Bryn Mawr 7-0 in the second period, but failed to extend their advantage.
Titus continued to keep the Owls in the game with another stellar performance against the Jays, making eight saves on nine shots on goal one year after stopping 9-10 at Homewood Field. Two of her best came in the third quarter on a Birk attempt in the run of play and an Anna Scott blast on a penalty corner.
That set the stage for a fourth quarter push by Bryn Mawr. Maggie Barilla had her penalty corner effort blocked five minutes into the period, and in the 53rd minute the Owls earned a pair of penalty corners. Though they failed to get a shot off on the first, Thekla Jubinville nearly leveled the contest on the second at the left post, only to be thwarted by Hopkins goalkeeper Alexis Loder.
That proved to be the final shot for either team. Bryn Mawr pulled Titus late for an extra attacker, but couldn't build the play into the attacking half as time expired.
Prior to the contest, Bryn Mawr recognized the senior class of 2023 – Cutone, Titus, Paige Davis, and Paige Schaefer. They comprise the second-winningest class in program history with 35 wins to date, despite missing the 2020 season due to COVID.
The Owls finish the regular season third in the Centennial Conference, their highest ever Centennial finish. They will host six seed and Bi-Co rival Haverford in the 1st round of the Centennial tournament at 2:30 PM on Tuesday.
